- Meeting Overview:
The Revere School Committee meeting on September 17, 2024, focused on issues, including student safety at Riviera High School, the introduction of a new School Resource Officer, and various funding allocations to address educational and administrative needs within the district.
During the public speaking section, several community members addressed the committee, expressing concerns and support related to recent incidents at Riviera High School. Nancy Martell, principal of the Hills School and a parent of a Riviera High School junior, praised the high school administration for their support amid challenging times. Martell emphasized the positive experiences her son has had and called for a focus on supporting students rather than allowing negative media portrayals to define the community. She stated, “These incidents do not define our community.”
Similarly, Joanne Wette, principal of the Susan B. Anthony Middle School, expressed support for Superintendent Dr. Dianne Kelly. Wette criticized the blame directed at Kelly, noting her recognition as Massachusetts Superintendent of the Year and her commitment to equity and student well-being. Christopher Bowen, principal at Riviera High School, also addressed the negative narratives surrounding the school, emphasizing the dedication of educators and the positive contributions of students. Bowen stated, “Our kids are amazing people.”
In her superintendent’s report, Dr. Kelly provided an update on the ongoing investigations at Riviera High School, conducted in collaboration with the Riviera Police Department. She reported that seven students had completed their expulsion hearings, with additional cases still in progress. The total number of students potentially involved could rise to sixteen. Dr. Kelly expressed gratitude for the support of the administrative team in navigating the consequences of recent events while maintaining a focus on student needs and safety.
The meeting also highlighted the introduction of a new School Resource Officer (SRO), Raaza, who brings a unique perspective to the role as a female Latina officer. This addition aims to strengthen the connection between law enforcement and students. Complementing this new role, a behavioral health unit has been established at Riviera High School, including another police officer and a social worker, to provide mental health support for students.
Mr. Bowen reported on a successful “meet the teacher” night, where parents participated in an open forum to foster collaboration between families and the school. Further initiatives include a community meeting scheduled for the following Tuesday, intended for all high school stakeholders.
The committee discussed the need for a district-wide parent or caregiver engagement campaign to enhance parental involvement in their children’s education. There was a consensus on the importance of restorative practices and understanding the roles of various support staff. Mr. Bowen’s monthly parent coffee sessions were mentioned as an effective platform for introducing support staff and discussing their roles, thereby fostering a closer relationship between families and the school.
Financial matters were a part of the meeting. The Ways and Means Subcommittee presented several funding allocations, including $50,000 for a consultant to assist with the District Improvement Plan, $35,000 for student engagement meetings, and $990,000 for three part-time paraprofessionals at the Par School to address overcrowded classrooms. Additional allocations included $140,000 each for operations administrator positions at various schools, $100,000 for hiring an additional nurse, and funds for Lincoln School door knob replacements and playground repairs.
A procedural debate arose regarding the allocation of $30,000 for various initiatives, including playground safety and student engagement. Members discussed the importance of following proper channels to avoid potential violations of open meeting laws. The conversation highlighted the necessity of clear communication and respecting subcommittee roles in the decision-making process.
The committee also addressed the need for a coordinator of operations and data position to support principals and assistant principals with data management and compliance with regulations such as Title IX. This role is intended to alleviate the burden on school leaders, allowing them to focus more on instructional responsibilities and improving educational outcomes.
Lastly, the meeting included the approval of various funding allocations and the hiring of several assistant principals at an annual salary of $140,000 each. The committee also approved a motion to extend COLA benefits to non-union employees, following successful negotiations of the ASME contract.
