Reverend Collins Day Appointed to Fill Commissioner Corsy’s Seat Amid Atlantic County Meeting
- Meeting Overview:
In a recent meeting, the Atlantic County Board of Commissioners appointed Reverend Collins Day Senior to fill the vacancy left by the late Commissioner Ernest Corsy. This appointment was a focal point of the gathering, which also included discussions on local economic partnerships, infrastructure projects, and community initiatives.
The appointment of Reverend Day was formalized following a special meeting organized by the Atlantic County Democratic Committee, chaired by Mike Solomon. Reverend Day took the oath of office administered by Atlantic City Mayor Marty Small, who spoke highly of the late Commissioner Corsy’s dedication and acknowledged the political pressures involved in selecting his successor. Reverend Day’s appointment was an event, as it filled a key position on the board left by a well-respected community leader.
In addition to this major appointment, the board addressed several resolutions, including the noteworthy passage of resolution 473. This resolution involved accepting a subaward grant from the New Jersey Office of the Attorney General for a community-based violence interruption program, totaling $115,000. After an initial vote, the resolution was revisited due to a potential conflict, but ultimately passed unanimously.
The commissioners also focused on economic development through a significant Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) involving the National Aerospace Research Park (NARTP), the Atlantic County Economic Alliance (ACA), and Rowan University. This agreement aims to spur collaboration on economic development and technology initiatives, with an expectation of diversifying the county’s economic landscape. The involvement of Rowan University was highlighted as a positive step, with one commissioner describing the partnership as both “powerful” and “impactful” for the county’s future.
Infrastructure projects were also a key topic, particularly the Lake Lenipe dam project, which saw recent enhancements. Progress on the dam was praised, with an official opening date tentatively set for September 22. The project was described as a lengthy but rewarding effort, with gratitude expressed to all parties involved, including Congressman Van Drew, who helped secure federal funding. This project is expected to benefit the local community significantly.
The meeting further explored community engagement initiatives, notably those run by the 4-H organization. The commissioners and attendees expressed appreciation for the variety of events organized, such as hiking and yoga, and emphasized the importance of supporting youth programs.
During public comments, Alice Carcelli from Indivisible Empathy United advocated for a proposed resolution in support of immigrant rights. Carcelli stressed the need for transparency and accountability in immigration enforcement, arguing for the protection of immigrant families and opposition to new detention facilities. Her comments highlighted ongoing community concerns regarding immigration policies and their local impact.
Another public comment came from Dana Ramage of the 4-H youth development program, who discussed upcoming events and wellness programs. Ramage’s remarks highlighted the importance of community involvement and volunteerism in supporting local youth.
The meeting concluded with a discussion on infrastructure issues, notably hazardous road conditions on English Creek Avenue. A local resident raised concerns about repeated accidents and requested the installation of a guard rail. The engineering department responded, explaining that guard rails are installed based on safety assessments and can sometimes pose additional hazards. The board considered alternative solutions, such as improved signage, to address the safety concerns.
