- Meeting Overview:
In a recent virtual meeting, the Boston Entertainment Application Board deliberated on two prominent applications that could alter the city’s nightlife landscape. The Revolution Hotel and Mighty Squirrel Brewing Co. proposed to add various live entertainment options to their respective venues, extending activities until 1:00 a.m. The board addressed these applications by examining aspects such as soundproofing measures, community feedback, and security plans.
The Revolution Hotel, under MVC 40b LLC, sought to enhance its non-live entertainment license by incorporating a range of live entertainment categories including a disc jockey, dancing by patrons, and performances by instrumentalists and vocalists. The hotel’s representatives, including their attorney and manager, outlined a plans to mitigate noise issues, a critical factor given the mixed-use nature of the hotel’s neighborhood. The board’s scrutiny of the application focused on the frequency of the proposed events, age restrictions, the use of promoters, security measures, and cover charge policies. Moreover, the board was keen to understand the expected capacity for the hotel’s basement venue and the strategies for managing patron dispersal after events.
The discussion also included input from a representative of the mayor’s office of Neighborhood Services, who noted that the hotel’s proposal had not spurred concerns among the local residents and abutters. The board encouraged further public testimony, signaling thorough consideration of the community’s perspective before arriving at a decision.
Mighty Squirrel Brewing Co.’s application was also at the forefront of the board’s agenda. The brewery aimed to diversify the use of its space by adding a spectrum of live entertainment options, such as table games, trivia nights, and floor shows. The applicant’s representatives drew attention to the success of similar events at their Waltham Tap Room and detailed the soundproofing efforts undertaken at the venue to prevent noise disturbances. The Mayor’s Office of Neighborhood Services and the Fenway Civic Association had reportedly expressed positive feedback on the brewery’s community outreach efforts.
Questions from the board revolved around the landlord’s consent for the proposed changes, cover charge practices, and the mechanisms in place for security and patron dispersal. Confirming the brewery’s conscientious approach to the community process, the Mayor’s Office of Neighborhood Services acknowledged the absence of entertainment-related concerns. The hearing concluded with the board taking the matter under advisement for a written decision, allowing a comment period open until May 27th.
