Richfield City Council Welcomes SK Food LLC with New Liquor License Approval
- Meeting Overview:
During the Richfield City Council meeting on July 22, 2025, the council approved new on-sale wine and 3.2% malt liquor licenses for SK Food LLC, doing business as KGMAC. This approval, following a public hearing with no objections raised, marked a step in welcoming new business to the community. Other topics included a proclamation honoring the ADA anniversary, appointments to the Human Rights Commission, and updates on city policies.
The council’s unanimous decision to grant SK Food LLC the new liquor licenses was a focal point of the meeting. Located on Nicollet Avenue South, the establishment completed all required steps, including a public safety background check, payment of licensing fees, and proof of commercial and liquor liability insurance. The council referenced resolution number 9511, which outlines disciplinary measures for establishments that experience ongoing problems. However, no issues were found that would prevent the issuance of the licenses. The public hearing, announced in the Richfield Southern Current on June 26, 2025, was attended by no community members wishing to speak. Consequently, the hearing closed without comment, and the council swiftly moved to approve the licenses. A council member extended a warm welcome to SK Food LLC, expressing community support for their venture.
Following this decision, the council addressed a vacancy on the Human Rights Commission. The city manager’s office had conducted an annual recruitment process, which involved press releases and postings on the city’s website and social media. After considering applicants from a previous session, the council appointed Tyler Beersbach to fill an alternate position on the commission, effective immediately. This appointment received unanimous support, with a council member expressing gratitude for Mr. Beersbach’s willingness to serve and acknowledging the contributions of the outgoing commissioner.
Mayor Mary Supple brought attention to the 35th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) during the proclamations and presentations segment. Human Rights Commissioner Garvey presented a proclamation to observe Disability Pride Month, encouraging appropriate programs and activities in Richfield.
The consent calendar included routine approvals such as disbursements and claims, designating polling places for an upcoming school board election, supporting future capital budget requests, and approving a work order for engineering services related to sidewalk projects. These items passed without discussion.
City Manager Katie Rodriguez delivered a report referencing the previous meeting’s discussions, touching on topics such as social media reactions to Pride events and the ongoing flavor tobacco ban. Despite violations reported at three tobacco shops, the city is not currently reviewing the ban. Rodriguez also mentioned the new agenda management software, Civic Plus, which is being refined based on feedback. She praised city staff for their leadership on this project, noting the collective effort involved in its implementation.
The council’s discussion segment, informally known as “hats off to hometown hits,” allowed members to acknowledge community successes. A council member commended the participation of city staff and council members in the recent 4th of July celebration, noting the event’s success despite high temperatures. They encouraged community involvement in future planning and welcomed donations and ideas for next year’s festivities.
