Ridgewood Council Faces Community Division Over Shedler Property Remediation Plan
- Meeting Overview:
In a recent meeting, the Ridgewood Village Council delved into the contentious topic of the Shedler property remediation plan, sparking community debate. The proposed removal of contaminated soil and subsequent environmental implications dominated the session, with residents voicing strong opinions on public safety and the project’s ecological impact.
The council prioritized a presentation by Matrix New World Engineering on the environmental status of the Shedler property. The engineering firm outlined its remediation strategy of excavation and disposal, a method chosen for its effectiveness in eliminating contamination. Sharon Stecker, a vice president at Matrix, emphasized that this approach offers immediate results and straightforward regulatory closure. Stecker assured that concerns regarding truck traffic, noise, and dust would be managed through standard construction practices. The council members engaged with Stecker to clarify technical terms and the complexities involved in alternative methods such as bioremediation, which were deemed uncertain and time-consuming.
Community members expressed substantial dissatisfaction with the plan, particularly the excavation strategy. A resident criticized the approach, describing it as an “oversimplification” and advocating for on-site bioremediation to avoid merely relocating the problem. Concerns were raised about the removal of mature trees, which could compromise safety and environmental quality. Another resident, Patty Infantino, lamented the potential loss of 35 mature trees and the impact on the remaining flora, while Dr. Salvo Infantino emphasized that merely moving contaminated soil without addressing ongoing pollution sources, such as nearby Route 17, would be inadequate.
The council faced criticism for a perceived lack of action and transparency, with one resident pointing out the irony of the village’s initial involvement in the contamination. The historical context of community meetings dating back to 2013 was highlighted, emphasizing a long-standing frustration with the council’s handling of the issue. Additional concerns about project timing during winter months were also raised.
Amidst the heated discussion, a resident named Roric attempted to shift the narrative, urging collaboration and defending the council’s integrity. He described the criticisms as “noise and misinformation,” advocating for a more positive community engagement approach. This sentiment seemed at odds with the prevailing skepticism among attendees.
In addition to the Shedler property debate, the council addressed other matters. The West Glenn Avenue sidewalks project moved forward with the adoption of resolutions for purchasing materials and awarding engineering services. A $259,000 grant was secured for resurfacing West Ridgewood Avenue. The introduction of an online overnight parking portal aimed to streamline processes for residents, further reflecting the council’s focus on operational efficiency.
Efforts to enhance the village’s recreational facilities were also noted, with the completion of an ADA-accessible playground at Habernickle Park, supported by a state grant. The council expressed appreciation for the collaborative efforts that brought this project to fruition.
Public safety and parking were topics of concern, with the council discussing adjustments to commuter parking regulations and the implementation of a pilot program for a temporary crosswalk. These initiatives aimed to balance the needs of commuters, local businesses, and pedestrian safety. The council also addressed ongoing litigation related to Kensington, with a focus on confidentiality and settlement discussions.
The meeting included updates on Ridgewood Water contracts and services, highlighting the utility’s efforts to maintain and improve infrastructure. Contract awards for laboratory analysis, electrical services, and landscaping were discussed.
