- Meeting Overview:
The recent meeting of the River Edge School Board was marked by community concerns over the alphab best before and after care program and discussions on financial challenges posed by rising health benefit costs and roof replacement bids. The Board also engaged in the superintendent search process, approved grants, and discussed upcoming school events and activities.
The public comment section of the meeting surfaced concerns regarding the alphab best before and after care program. Two individuals spoke at length about issues they have observed, including lost staff records and a lack of communication with families. More seriously, they detailed incidents where staff members reportedly acted aggressively towards students, raising alarms about child safety. These testimonies led to an appeal to the board to cease reinstating the program and instead consider alternative child care providers.
Financial matters were also a critical part of the meeting, with the board secretary announcing the approval of the budget. However, the board grappled with the unexpected 20% increase in state health benefits, which was initially projected at only 12%. This significant jump in costs could have implications for future financial planning and budget allocations.
Further financial deliberations ensued concerning a partial roof replacement. The project, funded by the SDA Grant, encountered a setback when the lowest bidder retracted their bid. This development necessitated additional discussions and will require the board to seek a resolution.
In the realm of school infrastructure, the board tackled the appointment of a public agency compliance officer and revisions to grant specifications to ensure alignment. The approval for door access and camera installations under the COPS Grant was also addressed.
The ongoing superintendent search was another focal point, with the board president expressing appreciation for the community’s input. The search is still open, with applications being accepted to find a suitable candidate for the superintendent position.
Amid the administrative and financial discussions, the principal provided updates on school activities that contribute to the vibrant educational environment of River Edge schools. These included the completion of Shark Tank projects, successful math nights, and the active participation of the Parent Teacher Organizations (PTOs) in supporting teachers and organizing an art show. The principal also celebrated the accomplishments of the sixth-grade math teams.
They also discussed the introduction of gardening activities at the school, which coincides with the hatching of baby chicks, bringing a hands-on learning experience to the students.
The meeting concluded with administrative matters as the board moved into a closed session to discuss personnel issues. The date for the next meeting was confirmed for April 17th.
