- Meeting Overview:
At the recent River Edge School Board meeting, significant events included honoring educators and staff, discussing retirements, and announcing the postponement of a board retreat to accommodate the hiring of a new superintendent. Among the honorees were two teachers of the year, a STEAM coach, and two paraprofessionals recognized for their contributions to the district. The upcoming hire of a new superintendent was also a key point, necessitating the rescheduling of a board retreat.
The board meeting began with the presentation of the Archie F. Ha Award to board member President Eun Kang, who was recognized for outstanding service and commitment. The award is a notable distinction. Following this, the board celebrated the achievement of Zoe Quan, a sixth-grader who secured second place in the Bergen County stigma-free sticker contest. Zoe’s project was highlighted for its importance in fostering a stigma-free atmosphere in schools.
Two teachers, Mrs. Jenik and Miss Pra, were recognized as teachers of the year for their exceptional service and impact on students. They were celebrated for creating positive learning environments and their commitment to education. Their acceptance remarks included personal anecdotes and reflections on their teaching experiences.
Lauren Protta, the district’s STEAM coach, was commended for her innovative teaching methods and dedication to integrating science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics into her curriculum. Protta’s speech mentioned her love for her work in River Edge, including the freedom to express herself and the joy of blending teaching with acting.
The board also acknowledged the service of two retiring paraprofessionals, Eleanor Noel and Lisa Spinetti. Both were honored with resolutions expressing gratitude for their years of service and best wishes for their retirement. The retirements were marked with applause and a celebratory recess with cookies and photographs.
Financial and administrative topics were also addressed during the meeting. The finance and facilities committee reported the return of 45% of state aid previously cut, amounting to $232,000, and discussed various projects including boiler maintenance, playground installation, and shared resources through the region 5 program. The personnel management committee reviewed contracts and an ongoing human resource performance audit, while the curriculum and instruction committee disclosed plans for a new math program pilot for fourth and fifth graders.
A notable administrative update was the announcement of the postponement of the board retreat originally scheduled for June 8th. This change was made to facilitate the process of hiring a new superintendent.
The meeting also included reports from the superintendent, who touched on the New Jersey Department report on bullying scores, the success of a recent Wellness day, and an upcoming community event. The principal’s report focused on assessments, staff appreciation week, and upcoming field days, while the board secretary discussed financial matters ranging from capital reserve accounts to transportation contracts for the next school year.
The meeting concluded with a public comments segment, during which the importance of maintaining decorum and adhering to the three-minute speaking limit was discussed. The next meeting was scheduled for June 26th.
