River Vale School Board Honors Long-Serving Staff Amid Rising Utility Costs
- Meeting Overview:
In a recent River Vale School Board meeting, the board paid tribute to retiring staff members and those celebrating 25 years of service while also addressing increases in utility costs due to the district’s heating and cooling systems.
The meeting began with a focus on the district’s heating and cooling systems, which have faced challenges following a recent update. The Buildings and Grounds Committee chair presented an extensive report. This operational detail has been particularly relevant given the unpredictable weather patterns affecting heating and cooling needs. The committee’s report underscored a substantial rise in utility costs, which jumped from a budgeted $211,000 to $361,000 over two years, an increase of $150,000.
This financial strain was further detailed through a breakdown of maintenance expenses. Annual boiler maintenance costs were approximately $6,000, while air conditioning maintenance was higher due to necessary repairs and replacements. Notably, repairs to coils at two schools cost around $8,500, and the replacement of Freon in chillers at two locations amounted to $9,000. Additional costs included $17,000 for variable rate drives and $15,000 annually for building automation systems. Since July, the total maintenance and repair expenses reached roughly $75,000, excluding another $20,000 allocated for filter replacements. The chair expressed gratitude for the transparency of the report, which addressed community concerns about the facility’s heating and air conditioning systems.
Following this, the meeting shifted to a more celebratory tone as the Superintendent led a special recognition segment honoring staff members. The Superintendent began by acknowledging the dedication and commitment of staff celebrating 25 years of service, calling them forward for recognition and photographs. The ceremony then turned to retirees, with tributes emphasizing their impact on the school community.
Among those recognized was Lisa Batinelli, a special education teacher with 17 years of service, noted for her positive influence on students needing extra support. Her ability to foster confidence and a love for learning was acknowledged, leaving a lasting legacy. Scott Calibri was also honored for his 25 years in the maintenance department, praised for his reliability and behind-the-scenes contributions to maintaining a safe and thriving educational environment.
Rich Holsworth, who served as head custodian for 11 years, was commended for maintaining a clean and inviting atmosphere at Roers. His professionalism and pride were noted as integral to the school’s community spirit. Carrie Orbaji, a second-grade teacher, was celebrated for her extraordinary dedication over 27 years, with her commitment to student success exemplified by her late nights spent reflecting on how to best support her students.
Other retirees recognized included Lisa Nielsen, a kindergarten teacher with 29 years of service, whose welcoming presence was a part of many families’ first school experiences. Kim Sanuli was praised for her engaging teaching style in kindergarten, inspiring students to excel. Kathy Sonell, with 28 years of experience, created a positive and joyful learning environment, and Kim Olri was acknowledged for her 36 years of service and dedication to helping students recognize their potential.
After the recognition ceremony, the School Business Administrator/Board Secretary announced that a school board workshop was scheduled for October and that candidate nominating petitions for school board positions were available, with three terms up for election. Additionally, information about a reassessment process scheduled for 2027 was shared, reflecting ongoing administrative planning.
The meeting proceeded to approve general resolutions G1 through G9 and business resolutions B1 through B14, all receiving unanimous support from board members present. Personnel resolutions P1 through P26 were also approved, with discussions reflecting on the significance of the recent recognition event and expressing gratitude for the retirees’ service.
