Rochelle Park Secures $168,000 Settlement in Longstanding Sewer Usage Dispute
- Meeting Overview:
During the Rochelle Park Town Council meeting, the council finalized a resolution to recover $168,000 from Laris, an industrial user with a history of excessive sewer usage. This settlement, which involves Laris paying for four years of back charges in three installments, marks a resolution to a complex issue that had persisted since 2022. The funds are expected to aid the township’s budget and potentially offset residential taxes. Kathy Cerichi and Mr. Cino were acknowledged for their roles in reaching this agreement. The resolution mandates that Laris continue regular payments moving forward, with penalties stipulated for any missed deadlines. This outcome was celebrated by the council as a critical financial recovery for the township.
In addition to the successful resolution of the sewer dispute, the meeting also focused on the Bergen County cooperative pricing system for electric generation supply service. The township administrator outlined the potential for substantial savings, including a 15% reduction in electricity costs if Rochelle Park opts into the program. This initiative, which features an option to participate in renewable energy, could further enhance the township’s Sustainable Jersey credits and open up grant opportunities. Despite some confusion regarding precise costs, the council acknowledged the importance of making a decision by the October 15th deadline to secure these benefits.
The meeting also touched upon the Bergen Fiber initiative, where the administrator reported on discussions with Millennium Fiber representatives. With the county’s system now operational, the township can opt-in for improved service at an estimated cost of $450 per month. This move would allow Rochelle Park to cancel one current provider while maintaining another for redundancy, which the administrator believes will lead to enhanced service efficiency.
Notably, the council received commendations for hosting a Hispanic Heritage Month flag-raising ceremony, reflecting positively on community involvement. A local real estate team also praised the building department for its accommodating service, highlighting effective town administration. Additionally, discussions revealed that the township’s upstairs offices are now fully occupied, generating significant revenue following a prior management bankruptcy.
The council addressed several other topics, including the approval of a flood mitigation plan update as part of the Bergen County hazardous mitigation plan. This update, crucial for securing funding, includes 11 actions to address flooding risks from the Saddle River and urban areas during heavy rain. Key projects involve installing generators at shelters, coordinating with Bergen County on river management, and repairing stormwater outfalls. Public outreach and efforts to elevate dwellings are also part of the plan.
Public participation played a role in the meeting, with residents voicing concerns over personal allegations and community issues. A heated exchange occurred when a resident, Jack Rener, addressed accusations that led to a visit from the Division of Youth and Family Services. The situation underscored tensions within the community, as residents expressed frustration over personal conflicts and the impact on their lives.
Another resident, Michael Warren, criticized the town’s approach to flood mitigation, urging the council to consider alternative plans and dismiss defeatist attitudes regarding federal and state assistance. He called for more decisive action to resolve flooding issues, emphasizing that residents desire solutions rather than temporary discounts on flood insurance.
