Rockaway Township Council Recognizes Varsity Team, Addresses Community Concerns
- Meeting Overview:
During the recent Rockaway Township Council meeting, the council recognized the local varsity Rockets team for their achievements, addressed various community concerns, and discussed infrastructure improvements. The meeting included discussions about safety, local facilities, and upcoming community events.
Mayor Joseph Jackson celebrated the varsity Rockets team’s accomplishments, particularly their recent victory against a rival team from Dville in the revived “Eagle Bowl.” Both the team and their cheerleaders were commended for their dedication and resilience, especially considering the technical challenges they faced during a pep rally. The Mayor congratulated the coaching staff and encouraged the young athletes to continue their hard work.
In the administrative portion of the meeting, the council introduced an ordinance amending Chapter 17 concerning watercraft operation, specifically removing references to Lake Telmark from township restrictions. This change reflects the private status of the lake. The ordinance passed unanimously. Another ordinance, O213, was deferred for further review.
Resident concerns played a role in the meeting, with individuals addressing issues such as road conditions and public safety. Michael, a resident, raised concerns about the state of Reservoir Road, noting that it required cleanup and maintenance, particularly regarding overgrown weeds and unclear stop lines at intersections. He also sought clarification on the ordinance concerning vessel operation, focusing on whether it affected size restrictions. It was clarified that the ordinance only involved Lake Telmark’s status.
Tom Campbell, another resident, praised recent road improvements near a horse farm and expressed interest in the township’s chip seal process, seeking information on future plans for this maintenance method. The response to his inquiry was deferred to a later segment.
Councilman John J. Quinn provided updates on planning board matters, noting a new proposal for a laundromat in a previously acceptable zone. He also highlighted the efforts of the Department of Public Works in improving the walkway from DBO to Peterson Field, emphasizing the importance of accessibility and safety for residents.
A senior picnic was announced, along with an Oktoberfest event at Germanmania Park. Councilman Adam Salberg shared updates on community engagement activities, including successful events like a pep rally and the Mayor’s Bowl game.
Councilman Pawel Wojtowicz addressed recent developments involving the county commissioners, pointing out the need for additional funding for embankment improvements at the railroad tracks near the township’s border. He also mentioned safety concerns about a section of track behind 84 Lumber, deemed unsafe, underscoring ongoing infrastructure challenges.
The meeting also featured a discussion about improvements to the local library’s facilities. With appropriated funds in place, renovations, especially to the bathrooms, appeared imminent. The council also reflected on successful summer community events, including a food pantry collection and an end-of-summer barbecue.
Councilman Emanuel Friedlander expressed gratitude on behalf of Fox Hills residents for the police department’s regular presence and attention to community concerns. He also shared personal pride in his daughter’s recognition as the number one nationally ranked girls’ soccer player for the week, which was met with congratulations from fellow council members.
The Rockaway Township Police Chief reported on the department’s activities in August, highlighting numerous service incidents, including motor vehicle crashes and domestic violence calls. The report served as a reminder for residents to remain vigilant, particularly with the school year commencing.
Additionally, fire prevention week was discussed, focusing on safety measures related to lithium-ion batteries. The water utility department announced upcoming water main lining projects, and the road department planned drainage pipe replacements.
The council meeting concluded with updates on community facilities, including progress on a new playground and basketball court. Excavation for the basketball court footings had begun.
