Rockaway Township Council Supports Community Initiatives and Approves Settlement Agreement
- Meeting Overview:
The Rockaway Township Council meeting on October 14, 2025, was marked by community engagement initiatives and the unanimous approval of a settlement agreement related to a malpractice claim. Mayor Joseph Jackson highlighted a successful food drive, and the council discussed a range of ordinances, community projects, and budget preparations for 2026.
A notable aspect of the meeting was Mayor Jackson’s acknowledgment of the community’s efforts in the recent food drive conducted by UNICO and the Care Center New Jersey. The initiative collected over 130 bags of food and raised approximately $1,200. Mayor Jackson expressed his gratitude towards the organizations and volunteers involved. In addition to the food drive, the mayor introduced Nam and Schula, proprietors of Mnasium, a new tutoring service that offers educational support from kindergarten through high school. This service is unique in its employment of local students as tutors, which provides an opportunity for community involvement and educational growth.
The council also focused on legislative matters, where Ordinance 02515 was introduced and unanimously passed. This ordinance supplements chapter 4 by adding an article concerning electric personal transportation devices. Another ordinance, 02513, which amends regulations on peddlers, canvassers, solicitors, and mobile food vendors, was adopted without discussion.
In a resolution, the council moved to a closed session to discuss pending litigation, resulting in a unanimous decision to authorize Mayor Jackson to sign a settlement agreement related to a malpractice claim against the township’s former attorney.
The meeting further highlighted the township’s best practices report presented by Miss Paul Mary, revealing a score of 39.5 out of 44 on the state’s best practices questionnaire. This score qualifies the township for full state aid allotment, an important achievement that reflects positively on the township’s management practices in areas such as ethics and transparency.
Council members shared updates from their respective committees, emphasizing community events and projects. One council member discussed the recent Rockaway Township PBA fundraiser and a tour of the new water building, noting its unexpectedly large size. Another member reported on a grant awarded to the library and addressed concerns over unsafe driving behaviors at car shows held at Rockaway River Barn, prompting assurance from the police chief regarding ongoing safety measures.
This collaboration allows students to gain work experience at the municipal building, performing tasks like shredding, data entry, and court setup. This initiative aims to support educational and vocational training for young adults, while offering municipal staff fresh perspectives and mentoring opportunities.
Council members also highlighted several successful community events, including a historical society pathways tour and a dinner honoring Tom Trapazo, the fire director. Additionally, a blood drive at White Metal Lake and a shredding event were noted, along with a food drive for Food for Hope, facilitated by ShopRite and Unico volunteers. These events reflect the township’s active community spirit and commitment to charitable initiatives.
Looking ahead, budget preparations for 2026 are on track, with department heads receiving budget packets and hearings scheduled for November. Traffic control measures are being implemented on Stro Lane, following a traffic report, and an ordinance is expected to be introduced soon. The council also discussed upcoming events, including flu shot clinics and a fall cleanup day on October 25.
Before adjourning, the council recognized the achievements of Captain Riley, who retired after 30 years of service in the police department.
