Arguably the most significant theme of the meeting was the board’s focus on community values and the nurturing environment within Rockaway Township schools. Educators and students alike shared their experiences. One educator described the environment at Birchwood as “truly a loving community,” highlighting the tradition of multi-generational attendance and the shared values of heart, honesty, empathy, acceptance, respect, and trust. Students echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the supportive and welcoming nature of their schools, where “no matter where you come from or what you look like, people will be friends with you.”

Educators discussed the role of SEL in helping students develop emotional maturity and resilience. One teacher illustrated the transformative impact of SEL, sharing a success story about a student who overcame self-doubt in mathematics through consistent encouragement and support. This narrative of personal growth over competition was a recurring theme, with educators stressing the importance of perseverance and a growth mindset.

Technology integration was another key topic at the meeting, with the board highlighting efforts to equip classrooms with interactive boards and provide Chromebooks to students starting in fifth grade. The integration of technology is intended to support collaborative learning environments and develop students’ communication skills.

The meeting also featured the election of new leadership within the board. Alison McGeary was unanimously elected as board president, while Noël Anderson was chosen as vice president after receiving unanimous approval from board members. The election process included nominations, roll call votes, and the administration of oaths of office.

Superintendent Dr. Richard Corbett shared his observations of the district, praising the positive atmosphere and community spirit evident across the six schools.

The board also addressed ongoing issues related to harassment, intimidation, and bullying (HIB) within the district. The superintendent reported ten investigations since November 17, of which four were confirmed to meet the established criteria. These cases included instances related to gender and distinguishing characteristics. The board affirmed the superintendent’s recommendations on these incidents.

This collective investment in student success and well-being was underscored by the active involvement of the Parent Teacher Association (PTA) and the broader community in school events and initiatives.
