Rona Hail Honored as Middlesex County Educational Support Professional of the Year
- Meeting Overview:
The North Brunswick School Board meeting on December 10, 2025, was marked by appreciation and recognition, most notably for Rona Hail, an instructional paraprofessional at North Brunswick Township High School. Hail was celebrated for her exceptional contributions to the school community and was honored as the 2026 Middlesex County Educational Support Professional of the Year. Additionally, the board conducted its final meeting of the year, highlighting its financial audit results and bidding farewell to two departing members.
The meeting spotlighted Rona Hail’s dedication and impact on students and colleagues, acknowledging her leadership and commitment to education. Described as “the heart of the team,” Hail’s role extends beyond classroom support, including advocacy as a union representative. Her efforts to inspire student participation and manage challenging behaviors were emphasized, alongside her professionalism and integrity. Her contributions earned her the prestigious county award, to be honored further in California. During her acknowledgment, Hail expressed her gratitude, stating, “I truly appreciate all of you coming. I feel so so honored. I really do. I’m humbled.”
Beyond individual recognition, the board addressed the departure of long-serving members, Zaire Ali and Coleen Keefe. Ali reflected on his tenure, noting the lessons learned and the privilege of representing the community. His farewell was marked by gratitude and a surprise appearance by his wife, adding emotional depth to his departure. Keefe, described as an “encyclopedia of knowledge,” received accolades for her stability and leadership through challenging times. Her farewell included a address, where she expressed appreciation for collaboration and community support, stating, “It has been an incredible journey, an incredible honor.”
The meeting also included the presentation of the annual audit report by Jerry Stankwitz from Samuel Klein. The audit covered the district’s financial operations from August to mid-November, yielding positive results with no significant adjustments needed. Stankwitz attributed the clean audit opinion to the diligence of the administrative staff. The board unanimously accepted the comprehensive financial report, expressing appreciation for the detailed and transparent findings.
Further discussions included committee updates and new initiatives. The education committee, chaired by a member, introduced Taproot, a social-emotional learning software, and plans to reboot professional learning communities. The implementation of the Amplify Math program for grades 5 through 8 was outlined.
Business operations updates highlighted ongoing referendum-related projects, such as HVAC upgrades and bathroom renovations at North Brunswick Township High School. The completion of HVAC controls upgrades at Lynwood was anticipated by winter 2026. The timeline for the fiscal year 2027 budget was also noted, with state aid announcements expected by February 26, 2026.
Human resources updates included staff retirements and new hires, as well as a new initiative to recruit exceptional student teachers in high-need areas. Additionally, the Middlesex County School Boards Association meeting discussed proposed legislative changes affecting charter school reform and school funding.
The public session featured Beth Pasner, president of the North Brunswick Township Education Association, who provided updates on PEP and FASA programs.
