Roselle Park Council Approves Key Ordinances Amid Community Engagement and Recognition
- Meeting Overview:
The Roselle Park Borough Council meeting focused on the adoption of several ordinances, the recognition of community leaders, and discussions on local development projects.
Prominently, the council unanimously adopted Ordinance 2836, which adjusts salary ranges for non-union employees and officials, following a public hearing where no objections were raised. The council then turned its attention to Ordinance 2837, a bond ordinance aimed at amending previous bonds related to funding public improvements and acquiring necessary equipment for the town. During the public hearing, a resident named George Ramirez inquired about the specific improvements, learning that the funds would be allocated to the Acrop Park project, which had already commenced. The council moved swiftly to adopt this ordinance with unanimous support.
Ordinance 2839 was also introduced, aimed at repealing a previous ordinance regarding public utility poles, with explanations provided regarding governance issues with the Board of Public Utilities. This ordinance was adopted without dissent.
A discussion arose around Resolution 355-25, concerning the renewal of a recreational cannabis license for Breakwater Treatment and Wellness Corp. While the resolution passed with four affirmative votes against two negatives, debate ensued over another cannabis license. Concerns were raised about renewing the Bera JC LLC license, with one council member expressing a strong preference against its renewal, citing potential legal repercussions if not justified. Despite the contentious nature of the vote, the mayor cast the deciding vote in favor of the resolution following a tie.
Councilman Johnson emphasized the importance of community support as Roselle Park High School prepared for its last home football game and the historical significance of the “shoe” exchanged between rival teams. He also reflected on the success of the Veterans Day ceremony and the community’s infrastructure improvements, including the completion of Persian Avenue and a significant grant from the New Jersey Department of Transportation for enhancements to Charlotte Terrace and Bridge Street.
Councilwoman Rosanna Antonuccio-Lyons spearheaded an initiative to honor Christian Restrepo as the 2025 Man of the Year, celebrating his integrity and resilience amid personal challenges, including a battle with colon cancer. Restrepo expressed gratitude for the recognition and support from his community. Antonuccio-Lyons also encouraged residents to contribute to the community center’s food pantry and reminded attendees of upcoming holiday events.
Councilman Petrosky offered condolences to families of recently deceased community members and reported on several meetings, including preparations for the 2026 joint sewer project and discussions with the historical society about funding initiatives. He also attended the preconstruction meeting for Acra Park, anticipated to be completed by spring.
Councilman Rebina highlighted the Veterans Day ceremonies and the contribution of American flags by South Mountain Elementary School to veterans. He reported on the Union County Action Plan Advisory Committee meeting, which focused on road safety initiatives and high-injury corridors in Roselle Park, and the council’s decision to request an agreement with Union County for safety beacons installation.
The meeting also addressed community concerns, including the aftermath of a five-alarm fire in Rosel that displaced 33 individuals. A council member expressed gratitude for first responders and encouraged residents to coordinate donations and support for affected families. Additionally, public comments brought forth issues such as disparities in official salaries, utility pole installations, and housing code enforcement, prompting responses and commitments from council members to address these concerns.
