Roselle Park Council Highlights Community Achievements and Addresses Local Issues
- Meeting Overview:
The recent Roselle Park Borough Council meeting focused on community recognition, local development projects, and municipal challenges. The meeting also included discussions on upcoming events and departmental updates.
A significant portion of the meeting was dedicated to recognizing the contributions of community members and local sports teams. Mayor Joseph Signorello III began by honoring Karina Fernandez for her leadership with the Reverend Servio Aresco Foundation, which has awarded 15 scholarships to Latino youth over five years. Fernandez expressed gratitude for the recognition and invited the community to an upcoming foundation event.
The council also celebrated the achievements of the Roselle Park wrestling team, with special recognition given to two standout wrestlers: Cole Appello, the 7U champion at the Newway Summer Nationals, and Luchia Reeri, who placed fifth at the 16U Fargo Championships. The Roselle Park Police Department was acknowledged for providing a police escort for Reeri’s return. Following this, the local fall ball championship team was honored for their successful season, which included winning a championship and a Halloween tournament.
Transitioning to issues of local development, the council discussed the potential opening of a new restaurant within the Meridia development. The restaurant, described as a higher-end Mexican/taco establishment, adds to the area’s dining options and is expected to enhance the local economy.
The completion of the municipal parking garage was another focal point. The garage, now equipped with signage, faces issues with tenant parking on levels intended for municipal use. Security measures, including the installation of cameras and an overhead door, are being implemented to address vandalism and restrict access. The council is set to deliberate on the possibility of metering parking spaces in the garage in the new year.
Concerns about abandoned properties were raised, particularly regarding a deteriorating property on Walnut Street. The council expressed frustration over stalled efforts to assist the property owner in selling, as a potential deal fell through. Similarly, discussions highlighted the “old perogi” property, where the owner’s inflated expectations are preventing a sale.
Public works issues were addressed, including the management of overtime hours due to holiday events and sewer backups. Residents were reminded to dispose of cooking oil properly to prevent grease buildup in sewers. The council also discussed leaf collection and street sweeping, noting that street sweeping will not resume until March.
The parade will feature festive floats and appearances by Santa and Mrs. Claus. The police department is also conducting a toy drive, encouraging donations of unwrapped toys at police headquarters.
A report from the Chief of Police noted initiatives to enhance youth interaction, including training for officers and a holiday crackdown on impaired driving funded by a $7,000 grant. The Recreation Department reported on its programs, serving over 340 members across 12 locations, and detailed winter sports registrations.
Administrative discussions included resolutions concerning property tax balances and extending borough property leases. The appointment of Alexander Mirabella as the new Chief Administrative Officer was debated, emphasizing the need for continuity during the transition following the current administrator’s departure.
In closing, council members expressed reflections on recent events and upcoming activities, with Councilman Joseph E. Petrosky sharing satisfaction over local sports achievements and the Thanksgiving holiday. Discussions also covered utility work in the fifth ward and the new Veranta building’s opening, featuring affordable units with veterans’ preference.
Mayor Signorello reflected on his tenure, acknowledging challenges and achievements, including infrastructure improvements and community facility enhancements. He outlined the process for selecting his successor, with the incumbent party presenting three candidates to the council for consideration.
