Roselle Park Council Prioritizes Traffic Safety at Key Intersection Amid Development
- Meeting Overview:
In a recent Roselle Park Borough Council meeting, the most concern was the safety of pedestrians and drivers at the intersection of Chestnut Street and Lincoln Avenue. The council unanimously approved a resolution for a traffic engineering study, aimed at addressing longstanding safety issues exacerbated by ongoing transit-oriented developments. Other discussions included updates on the Persian Avenue project, tributes to community figures, and several community initiatives.
The intersection of Chestnut Street and Lincoln Avenue was at the forefront of the meeting, with council members expressing concern over its hazardous conditions. As developments proceed around the train station, including the anticipated Ryan project, the influx of pedestrians and increased traffic volume have heightened the urgency for safety enhancements. A council member described the intersection as “wonky” and resembling a “Z,” which creates confusion and potential danger for both drivers and pedestrians. The council emphasized the necessity of considering traffic lights or other safety measures, noting that these issues have persisted for years, even without recent developments.
The resolution to conduct a traffic study received unanimous support. The study aims to assess the feasibility of installing traffic lights or other improvements to mitigate the dangers at this intersection, a vital step given the location’s role as a key transit hub.
In addition to traffic safety, the council addressed the commencement of the long-awaited Persian Avenue project. A council member, who had been advocating for this initiative, urged residents to remain patient throughout the project’s duration, acknowledging that challenges may arise but emphasizing the positive impact upon completion.
Tributes to community members also featured prominently in the meeting. The council dedicated a pavilion at Boycow Park to James D. Jim Vigliotti, a decorated World War II veteran and esteemed Roselle Park resident. Vigliotti’s extensive service record, including 34 combat missions, and his contributions to the community post-military were celebrated. Council members expressed gratitude for his legacy and the positive influence he had on the community.
The council also paid respects to Doug Lewis. Additionally, Councilwoman Lyons extended her gratitude to Andrew for his assistance with the flower pot selections on Chestnut Street, noting the enhanced visual appeal and community pride resulting from the improvements.
Several community initiatives were discussed, including the borough’s fall tree planting program, supported by a greening grant. Over 60 shade trees are set to be planted, with 24 already completed in the fifth ward. Residents were encouraged to request trees for future plantings, and nonprofit groups were invited to participate in a borough-wide cleanup scheduled for October 25th, with available stipends to support their efforts.
The meeting also highlighted recent community events, such as the successful 10th annual Festival of India and other cultural celebrations reflecting the diversity of Roselle Park. Council members emphasized the importance of these gatherings in fostering community unity and cultural richness, particularly during Italian Heritage Month.
A public hearing on the Year 52 Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program funds took place, with proposed projects including a roadway rehabilitation program for Charles Street and a senior citizen social service program. Despite the open invitation for public comment, no residents came forward to speak on the matter.
During the public comment period, residents raised questions regarding the redevelopment plan for a property on Chestnut Street. Council members confirmed ongoing negotiations with a conditional redeveloper and addressed concerns about potential conflicts of interest. The council reassured the public that any conflicts were being managed appropriately, although specific details were not disclosed.
Councilman Johnson concluded his report by extending good wishes to all candidates running for office, urging them to maintain a positive approach during their campaigns. He also highlighted the importance of pedestrian safety, especially with Halloween approaching, and provided statistics to underscore the need for caution.
