Roselle Park School Board Honors Student Achievements, Tackles Bullying, and Celebrates Educators
- Meeting Overview:
The Roselle Park School Board meeting was marked by the recognition of student achievements, a discussion on anti-bullying efforts, and the celebration of educators. The board also reviewed graduation proficiency results and planned for the upcoming academic year, addressing various educational and extracurricular initiatives.
The meeting began with a focus on student accomplishments, highlighting a diverse range of achievements in academics, athletics, and leadership. Middle school students were celebrated for embodying the values of perseverance, respect, integrity, determination, and excellence. Students like Danny Chox, Nellis Canar, and Morgan O’Keefe were recognized for their perseverance, while Rose Genova and Emmanuel Guerrero stood out in the respect category. Excellence in academics was exemplified by students such as Eileen Diaz and Indira Jadav. The students’ accomplishments were commemorated with a photograph, capturing the spirit of their hard work.
Athletic achievements were not overlooked, as the board celebrated the girls’ softball team for finishing first in their division, with individual honors awarded to team members. Recognition was also given to Logan Pascowich, a hockey player who achieved first-team honors in the McMullen division. The athletic director’s presentation emphasized the importance of sports in fostering teamwork and discipline among students.
The superintendent’s report then moved to the district’s efforts to combat bullying, with a presentation of the state-mandated self-assessment for harassment, intimidation, and bullying. The report, covering the period from September to December 31, 2024, revealed 17 investigations into potential bullying incidents, with 10 confirmed cases. The district highlighted various remedial measures, including counseling and disciplinary actions, as part of a comprehensive approach to creating a positive school climate. Programs on suicide prevention, anti-bullying lessons, and social media awareness were tailored to meet the needs of each school community.
The meeting further detailed the district’s anti-bullying self-assessment scores, which ranged from “partially meeting” to “exceeding requirements.” Scores for schools like Aldine and Roselle Park High School were among the highest, while the preschool’s lower score was attributed to its recent opening. The overall district grade was 66 out of a possible 78 points, with the full report accessible on the district website.
In addition to these discussions, the Director of Guidance and District Testing Coordinator updated the board on the New Jersey Graduation Proficiency Assessment (NJGPA) results. The data showed an 87.8% pass rate for English language arts among 11th graders, surpassing the state average. While the math pass rate was slightly below the state average, it marked significant improvement from previous years. The analysis also highlighted progress among English language learners and special education students.
The meeting also recognized outstanding educators who received the Governor’s Teacher of the Year award from various schools. These honors celebrated the educators’ contributions to student success and their dedication to fostering an inclusive and supportive learning environment.
Looking ahead, the board discussed plans to enhance educational opportunities and support systems. This included an expansion of preschool classrooms, the introduction of STEM activities, and efforts to improve behavioral support through the INRS team. The board emphasized the importance of addressing behavioral issues and promoting inclusivity through co-teaching practices and professional development.
The board also noted improvements in technology and facilities, with plans to enhance digital infrastructure and upgrade school facilities, including secure vestibules and HVAC systems. The transition to a fully digital platform for student athletics was highlighted, offering live streaming of events and streamlined registration processes.
Public comments during the meeting included expressions of gratitude from parents and community members for the educational opportunities provided by the district. The creation of the Jeffrey Luna Scholarship, honoring a local youth who battled cancer, was announced.
