Rosemount-Apple Valley-Eagan School Board Celebrates Debate Achievements and Approves Legislative Platform
- Meeting Overview:
At a recent meeting of the Rosemount-Apple Valley-Eagan School Board, a series of recognitions highlighted the district’s commitment to excellence in debate and education. The board celebrated the achievements of students and educators, approved a legislative platform for 2026, and discussed significant initiatives in Indian education and financial management.
The meeting began with a focus on student and staff achievements in debate. Apple Valley High School assistant debate coach Sophia Ishall introduced Jackson Hilddrth, who achieved second place at the state tournament and qualified for the National Speech and Debate Tournament in Richmond, Virginia. Hilddrth’s accomplishments in Lincoln Douglas debate were lauded, with Ishall emphasizing his intelligence, thoughtfulness, and articulate nature.
Further accolades were given to students from Eagan High School, presented by debate coach Chris McDonald. Notable mentions included policy debate semi-finalists Josiah Schoffzen and Tristan Wyn, and public forum semi-finalists Kira Schumacher and Hoffsa Amed. Congressional debate finalist Nvieha Kashv was also recognized for finishing third at the state tournament and qualifying for nationals, although her partner Sanvi Seth, a four-time national qualifier, missed the event due to a flight delay.
The board also acknowledged Greta Thomas from East View High School as the 2026 Minnesota Debate Association Coach of the Year. Her contributions to the debate program and her impact as an English teacher were praised.
In addition to debate achievements, the board discussed the district’s legislative platform for 2026. Logan Schultz, principal of Echo Park Elementary School, and student Wyatt Miller from Rosemount High School presented the platform’s key priorities, which include stable and predictable funding, teacher licensure, and creating safe, supportive schools. The platform advocates for maintaining the basic funding formula and repealing proposed cuts to special education funding.
Mental health services within schools were identified as critical, with a call for strengthened pipeline programs for social workers and counselors. The platform also emphasized the necessity of addressing safety concerns, proposing a raise in the cap on school safety levies. This would allow districts to hire more School Resource Officers and address local safety needs in line with best practices.
Superintendent Bosone recognized several individuals for their contributions to education, including Mia Battis and Zach Pra from East View High School. Pra was acknowledged as Minnesota’s outstanding speech and debate educator of the year. The board approved the legislative platform with a unanimous vote.
The discussion then shifted to the Indian education program, where Director of Equity and Inclusion Virgil Jones introduced the Native American Parent Advisory Council chairperson Nicole Lonree Brovald. The program highlighted goals and activities designed to support Native American students, including cultural learning opportunities and leadership groups. A notable initiative involved raising awareness for the “Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Relatives” campaign.
The program also provided field trip opportunities, such as attending the American Indian Science and Engineering Society conference in Minneapolis. High school students received academic support, including ACT preparation classes and college application assistance. The program fosters collaborations to develop Dakota and Ojibwe learning resources and emphasizes Indigenous Peoples’ Day lessons.
Financial updates were presented concerning the district’s general obligation school building bonds. The board adopted a resolution authorizing financial advisors to solicit proposals for the sale of bonds. This refinancing strategy is intended to reduce future debt service payments and tax levies, benefiting taxpayers.
Additionally, the board discussed a collective bargaining agreement with school service employees represented by SEIU Local 284. The agreement includes salary increases and changes to retirement eligibility, aligning with financial parameters. Superintendent Bosone provided updates on transportation challenges, noting efforts to improve reliability amid bus driver shortages.
