Roxbury Town Council Celebrates Ice Hockey Triumph and Discusses Local Projects
- Meeting Overview:
The recent Roxbury Town Council meeting celebrated the Roxbury High School ice hockey team’s remarkable HOS Cup victory, while also addressing key local issues including the Hercules property cleanup, infrastructure plans, and support for local businesses. The council recognized the team’s significant achievement, discussed ongoing and future projects, and emphasized community support.
The most notable event of the meeting was the recognition of the Roxbury High School ice hockey team, who secured the HOS Cup with an impressive season record of 16-5. The council and community members, including Assemblyman Mike Gandamore, congratulated the team for their outstanding performance and dedicated season. The team’s coach, Beambo, highlighted the challenges overcome by the “right 17” players, who dedicated their season to a former captain, Gavin. The council expressed pride in the team’s accomplishment and reiterated the importance of community support.
In addition to the celebrations, the council addressed significant local matters, starting with the ongoing cleanup of the Hercules property. The cleanup, expected to continue until 2029, is important for the future development of Roxbury and Morris County. Ed Meeks, representing the Hercules property, shared optimistic updates on the progress, aligning with previous expectations.
Infrastructure improvements also took center stage, with the introduction of several ordinances aimed at enhancing local facilities. Ordinance 0325 proposed capital improvements and equipment acquisitions totaling $3,943,000, funded through grants and capital improvement funds. The council unanimously approved this ordinance, recognizing its potential impact on the community. Similarly, Ordinance 0425 focused on water system improvements and vehicle acquisition for the water utility, with an appropriation of $22,000, while Ordinance 0525 addressed sanitary sewer system upgrades, with a budget of $1,154,000. Both received unanimous support from the council.
Traffic and accessibility issues were also raised, with concerns about speeding and the destruction of a pathway leading to a playground. A local resident, Olson from Virtual Valley, urged the council to increase police presence and address the damaged path. The mayor committed to having the Department of Public Works assess and potentially restore the path to ensure safe access to recreational areas.
The council further discussed the introduction of a shared services agreement for mapping services, essential for planning and development, particularly in affordable housing. The change in the licensing agreement with Morris County necessitated this agreement, which the council described as invaluable despite concerns over costs.
Local businesses struggling due to traffic disruptions and economic challenges were also a focus of the meeting. The council acknowledged the difficulties faced by these establishments, with some experiencing up to a 40% drop in sales. In response, a federal grant initiative was discussed, offering $5 million in assistance to affected businesses. The council emphasized the importance of community support and shopping locally to aid in business recovery.
The meeting also touched on upcoming community events, such as “Clean Communities Day” and the 250th anniversary celebration, encouraging resident participation.
