Roxbury Town Council Discusses Future Playground Plans and Community Initiatives
- Meeting Overview:
The Roxbury Town Council meeting on January 31, 2024, covered topics such as the future of a community playground, recognition of local contributors to the Hometown Heroes Banner Program, and upcoming community events.
The most notable topic of the meeting was the discussion surrounding the planning and future development of a community playground facility known as Imagination Station. The playground, originally built in 1991, has been a vital recreational space for children in Roxbury Township. Council members noted that the current structure, approximately 16 years old, has reached a point where proactive measures for replacement are necessary. The Department of Public Works and the Recreation Department have been instrumental in the maintenance efforts, and community volunteers had even undertaken a repainting project a few years back.
Plans for the new playground were presented during the meeting. These designs cater to children aged two to five and those six and older. The new playground is set to incorporate environmentally friendly and ADA-accessible features, aligning with community needs and modern standards. A pavilion for seating and shade, a rain garden for water drainage, and an educational kiosk for local schools were also proposed.
The project is anticipated to span several years, with the capital budget set for 2028. Council members emphasized the importance of involving the community in the planning process, acknowledging the significant volunteer efforts that had previously contributed to playground installations. The intention to honor those contributions in the new project was noted. To fund this expansive project, opportunities for grant funding from the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) and the Department of Community Affairs (DCA) were discussed, with the potential for 25% funding offset and 0% loan options. The timeline for the grant application process was a concern, as the grant window is expected to open in October, with submissions due in February. Managing the construction phase, anticipated to take two to three months, will be important to meeting grant requirements.
In other business, the meeting featured the recognition of local contributors to the Hometown Heroes Banner Program, an initiative that honors individuals for their contributions to the community. Certificates of appreciation were presented to several contributors, including Kyle Kramer, who provided his bucket truck to assist in the program’s implementation. The Mayor praised the contributions of the Roxbury Rotary Club and the BFW Post 2833, acknowledging their important roles in the program’s success. Michelle Hollerin was also recognized for her coordination and oversight, deemed instrumental in ensuring the program’s smooth operation.
The council also discussed other community initiatives and events. The Economic Development Committee is planning for the town’s 250th anniversary, and residents were reminded of the upcoming Taste of Roxbury event at the Senior Center and a mystery dinner theater planned for October. The Mayor encouraged attendance at a service at Temple Salam, inviting the community to support the local Jewish community. Council members commended ShopRite’s annual Bag Out Hunger event, highlighting the council’s participation.
Additionally, the council considered a proposed ordinance aimed at prohibiting tobacco product possession by individuals under 21 on school or public property. A council member raised a question regarding how this proposed law would apply to medical marijuana prescriptions for individuals under 18.
