- Meeting Overview:
In a recent Rutherford Borough Council meeting, several matters were addressed, including the promotion of two police officers, the introduction of the 2024 municipal budget, and community concerns ranging from air traffic to public safety enhancements near schools. The meeting also touched on the recognition of Women’s History Month and autism awareness, as well as community events and environmental initiatives.
This decision was one of the key highlights of the meeting.
Another major topic of discussion was the introduction of the calendar year 2024 municipal budget. The budget was commended for its responsible management, particularly in light of increases in general liability insurance and workers’ compensation costs. The council’s ability to minimize the impact on taxpayers was noted.
Community concerns were also at the forefront, with two public comments standing out. Charles Gun addressed the council regarding a delay in the American Legion post 453 wall construction, emphasizing the 20-month wait for materials and suggesting land clearing in the meantime. In response, the borough administrator explained that the project manager had left the firm, and the search for a new contractor to complete the project was underway. Meanwhile, Lois D. Tomaso raised issues about increased air traffic over Rutherford and the control of Teterboro flights being shifted to Philadelphia. In light of these concerns, a council member mentioned an upcoming meeting with a relevant authority to further address the issue.
The Rutherford Police Department was mentioned as planning to enforce violations strategically and implement measures to enhance safety in school zones. This initiative reflects an ongoing concern for the well-being of children and other pedestrians in areas of high traffic concentration.
In addition to safety measures, the meeting included discussions about community involvement and environmental efforts. A council member reminded the community about the upcoming Arbor Day tree Fest and encouraged participation in the community garden.
Moreover, the council acknowledged and thanked various departments and individuals for organizing events and addressing community concerns. Upcoming events such as an access for all committee meeting and activities at the Kip Center were highlighted, along with the importance of moving past awareness to focus on inclusion and advocacy for the developmentally disabled community. The recognition of Autism Awareness in April and the successful Women’s History Month event were also notable topics of discussion.
Other business conducted at the meeting included the approval of two settlement agreements with borough employees and consideration of changing the start time of an April 8th meeting to accommodate a Women’s Club celebration. An ordinance regarding storm water management and salt storage was introduced on first reading, and an ordinance amending the salary ordinance for summer camp staff was passed on second reading. A motion was made and passed for the summer daycare staff.
