Rutherford School Board Elects New Leadership Amid Successful Audit and Financial Health Report
- Meeting Overview:
The Rutherford School Board meeting on January 5th saw the election of new board leadership, a detailed presentation of the district’s financial audit, and discussions on upcoming technological transitions and surveys. These developments were complemented by expressions of gratitude and optimism for the board’s future endeavors.
In a notable move during the meeting, Dr. Sergio Alati was unanimously elected as the new president of the Rutherford School Board. Following his election, Alati presided over the meeting, which included the election of James Sprayberry as the vice president. This leadership transition came after the affirmation of three newly elected board members—Christina Kates, Chris Ki, and James Sprayberry—who took their oath of office, pledging to support both the U.S. Constitution and the Constitution of New Jersey. The board members were reminded of their code of ethics, which guides their actions and decisions.
The meeting proceeded with a presentation by auditor Alex Bice from Lurch, Vinci, and Bliss, who delivered the findings of the district’s most recent audit. Bice reported that the audit received three unmodified opinions, the highest level of compliance with no material weaknesses or deficiencies identified. The presentation detailed the district’s financial status, noting a decrease in the general fund surplus from approximately $6.2 million to $5 million. Despite this decrease, the district’s financial health remains robust. The capital reserve stands at approximately $1.7 million, earmarked for capital projects, with an additional maintenance reserve of $100,000 designated for maintenance projects. Year-end encumbrances of about $92,000 will roll into the current year for outstanding purchase orders, and an excess surplus of approximately $857,000, which exceeds the 2% cap, will be utilized in upcoming budget years.
Bice also highlighted a capital financing lease balance of $96,705 and characterized the overall financial health of the district as strong. He made one immaterial recommendation regarding student activities. Bice expressed gratitude for the cooperation from the offices of the board secretary and superintendent throughout the audit process, and board members appreciated the clean audit findings and the prompt attention to the recommendation.
Amid these discussions, the superintendent acknowledged the newly elected and re-elected board members, emphasizing the importance of ethics in their operations. He praised the business office for achieving clean audits, attributing this success to the diligent work of various budget managers and supervisors. The superintendent also discussed a significant upcoming transition from the current business platform, CSI, to Genesis. This overhaul in the system used for human resources, payroll, and budget management began on January 1st and will require extensive training for administrative assistants responsible for inputting data into the new system.
The board was informed of plans to distribute student surveys to grades 6 through 12 to gather insights about students’ comfort levels in schools, their perceptions of academic programs, and their experiences with co-curricular activities. It was emphasized that participation would be voluntary and anonymous to ensure honest feedback.
In other board matters, a retiring coach was acknowledged for her contributions to the district, with a board member expressing gratitude for her positive influence and energy. This appreciation came amid plans for a celebratory event in her honor later in the year. The board also addressed personnel, curriculum, and finance matters, with several motions passed unanimously across these areas.
As the meeting progressed, the board discussed a legislative update on Assembly Bill 4121, which seeks to eliminate high school graduation proficiency tests. The complexities surrounding the bill were acknowledged, with insights into potential support and opposition.
