Rutherford School Board Faces Community Call for Diwali Recognition as a School Holiday
- Meeting Overview:
The November 10, 2025, meeting of the Rutherford School Board was marked by significant public advocacy for recognizing Diwali as a district-wide holiday. Alongside discussions on cultural inclusivity, the board examined challenges related to rising health benefit costs and reviewed feedback from a comprehensive community survey.
The meeting featured a passionate public comment session centered on the proposal to recognize Diwali, a major festival in South Asian cultures, as an official school holiday. Sar Jatani opened the discussion by highlighting Pennsylvania’s recent legislative decision to establish Diwali as a state holiday, noting that New Jersey, with a higher South Asian population, should follow suit. Jatani emphasized that recognizing Diwali would require minimal administrative adjustments and would promote inclusivity within the district.
Mina Patel, a Rutherford resident and parent, argued that Diwali’s recognition would allow children to fully engage in cultural celebrations without the burden of schoolwork. She stressed that the festival’s values of kindness, humility, and gratitude align with educational goals, and recognizing Diwali would empower students with a sense of identity. Patel stated, “I truly believe that a child’s culture shapes their character.”
Courtney Fo, a newcomer to Rutherford, appreciated the school’s inclusion of Diwali in the curriculum but pointed out the need for broader cultural recognition, including Jewish holidays. Her comments underscored the importance of inclusivity across diverse traditions. Mitsu Haga and Kenishha Vagasia, both alumni, supported the call for a Diwali holiday, sharing personal experiences of cultural challenges during their schooling.
The board acknowledged the public’s input and recognized the need for cultural competency. A member outlined the complexities of incorporating new holidays into the school calendar, which already accommodates numerous religious observances and state holidays. While students can take excused absences for religious holidays, the board must ensure the required number of school days is met. Teachers are advised to avoid assigning homework due on or after such holidays.
Superintendent Jack Hurley addressed the board, reporting increases in health benefit premiums that would impact the district’s budget. He noted a 37% rise in one plan and a 31% increase in another, flagging these as concerning trends requiring careful financial planning.
The meeting also highlighted the district’s ongoing efforts to engage with the community through surveys. A board member praised the initiative, noting the importance of collecting both positive and constructive feedback. Upcoming surveys would assess the district’s culture and climate among faculty, staff, and students, with the potential for additional surveys based on initial results. Concerns were raised about the clarity of survey instructions, particularly for parents with children in multiple schools.
Mr. Hurley shared insights from a recent Washington conference, where educational leaders discussed skills critical for graduates not pursuing further education. The emphasis on competencies like critical thinking, creativity, and collaboration resonated with attendees.
The board celebrated the contributions of reelected members Chris Conti and James Sprayberry, welcoming newcomer Christina Cole, who will join in January. Upcoming community events, including plays, concerts, and a casino night, were noted, alongside the final board meeting of the year scheduled for December 1.
As the meeting transitioned to formal business, the board approved personnel matters, curriculum motions, and finance proposals with minimal discussion. The buildings and grounds report highlighted recent improvements, including the painting of a district cottage. An executive session was proposed to reflect on public comments, and the meeting concluded without further public input.
