Second graders presented their work linked to ancient Greek civilizations and the War of 1812. They also engaged in a science experiment involving the melting of a snowman, which tied into their studies about nature’s cycles. The third graders provided insights into their projects on Norse mythology, the solar system, and ancient Rome, with one student expressing fascination with the goddess Freya. Their presentations underscored the continuity of knowledge and the effectiveness of the Amplify program in fostering student engagement and excitement.

Fourth graders continued the theme, highlighting their projects on the Middle Ages, complete with props to create an immersive learning environment. The enthusiasm of both students and teachers was apparent, as they shared their educational journeys and the impact of the Amplify program on their learning.

In addition to the program presentation, the meeting covered topics related to the school calendar. The board discussed various adjustments, such as the last day of school scheduled for June 18. The usage of snow days was also addressed, with one school day set to be recovered before Memorial Day weekend. Adjustments to holiday closures were proposed, including recognizing Martin Luther King Day and aligning President’s Day with common practices in other districts. There was also a discussion about starting the next school year before Labor Day, with students potentially returning on September 3 and 4. The timing for spring break was considered, with a preference for scheduling it in April, avoiding the Easter holiday to accommodate families and faculty.

The meeting also included a presentation by a student representative, who provided updates on various district activities. The student highlighted the successful performance of “Guys and Dolls” at Saddle Brook High School and upcoming events such as junior testing and AP mock exams. She provided updates on the athletic hall of fame, which will honor new inductees at an upcoming football game. The district’s involvement in a grant for augmentative communication devices was discussed, highlighting the mission to integrate technology to enhance learning outcomes. Updates on state assessments were provided, specifically regarding the NAP assessment for fourth graders at Franklin School.

The budget and finance committee reported challenges related to rising health benefits costs, which may necessitate tough decisions regarding staffing and programs. The committee maintained all current staff positions and programs, though budget cuts were made to supply accounts. A meeting was scheduled for March 12 to finalize the budget.

Other notable discussions included facilities and operations updates, focusing on student parking and lighting concerns near Smith School. Potential relocation of voting stations was considered to minimize disruption. PTO updates highlighted ongoing fundraising efforts, including events like a Bunny Breakfast and a Harlem Wizard basketball game.
