Saddle Brook Council Tackles Speed Concerns and Unveils Solar Initiative
- Meeting Overview:
The Saddle Brook Town Council meeting addressed local issues, including traffic safety on Fifth Street and the introduction of a community solar program aimed at reducing residents’ electric bills. The council also recognized individuals for their contributions to the community, provided updates on local events, and introduced new ordinances.
The meeting’s most pressing topic centered on traffic safety concerns due to a significant volume of vehicles on Fifth Street. A speed study conducted by the police department revealed that nearly 42,000 vehicles passed through the area over ten days, with an average speed of 30 miles per hour—5 miles over the posted limit. Alarmingly, over 16% of vehicles exceeded the tolerance limit of 35 miles per hour. In response, the council proposed installing speed humps near the entrance of a park undergoing renovation. These measures are intended to enhance safety, especially as the park’s new basketball court and improved playground facilities are expected to increase its use.
In addition to addressing traffic concerns, the council discussed a new solar energy initiative. This program offers a 31% discount on solar credits applied to residents’ PSEG bills and is available to lower- and moderate-income households starting in mid-2026, with broader availability in 2027. The initiative is part of a broader effort to reduce the financial burden of rising electrical costs and promote sustainable energy use without requiring the installation of solar panels. The council encouraged residents to engage with this opportunity, highlighting its potential for reducing household expenses.
The meeting also recognized several individuals in honor of Black History Month. Eric Holman, Travis Suabi, and Christopher Ree were acknowledged for their dedication to emergency services. Holman, vice president of the Saddlebrook Volunteer Ambulance Corps, started his service in 2017, while Suabi joined in 2020 and serves as a second lieutenant. Ree, a police officer, began his career in March 2023. Each received a proclamation detailing their contributions.
In a nod to community engagement and health awareness, the council proclaimed February as Heart Health Month. The emphasis was placed on raising awareness about heart disease, the leading cause of death in the United States. Factors such as smoking, high blood pressure, and obesity were highlighted, along with advances in medical technology that improve patient outcomes. The council shared a personal anecdote about a resident’s successful heart surgery.
The council introduced several new ordinances, including amendments to the township code for handicap parking and updates to the affordable housing ordinance. These changes aim to align local regulations with current standards and address community needs. An ordinance exempting first responders from animal licensing fees passed, though Councilwoman Sarah Sanchez abstained from voting due to her status as a first responder.
Acknowledging community events and initiatives, the council discussed a recent Ramadan celebration and the upcoming return of the New Jersey Motor Vehicle mobile unit. Plans were announced for a chicken bingo event and a senior lunch program.
Expressions of gratitude permeated the meeting, with council members acknowledging the efforts of first responders and public works during a recent snowstorm. Personal stories related to health and loss were shared, emphasizing the community’s collective experiences and resilience. The council also celebrated the achievements of local figures, including a Special Olympics gold medalist, Angelina Palada, and preparations to honor notable women during Women in History Month.
