- Meeting Overview:
At the recent Saddle Brook School Board meeting, members approved a new dual enrollment articulation agreement with Bergen Community College, revised the K-6 art curriculum, and discussed a variety of field trips and other educational initiatives.
One of notable topics discussed was the approval of a new dual enrollment articulation agreement with Bergen Community College. This arrangement allows high school students to enroll in college-level courses taught by approved teachers on the high school campus. These courses are part of the students’ daily schedules, and they have the option to pay a discounted fee to earn college credit. A board member clarified that students are not required to attend Bergen Community College after graduation to retain these credits, which can potentially transfer to other institutions. The exact requirements for teachers to be approved to teach these courses depend on the college’s standards, and the board plans to review these specifics further.
The board also reviewed and approved various field trip requests. The high school band will perform at the Pulaski Parade in New York City and participate in a band festival at Clifton High School. Other approved trips include fall hikes organized by the Outdoors Club and community-based instruction trips for sale classrooms to local libraries and Ikea. Additionally, the fourth grade will visit Museum Village. The board acknowledged the efforts of teachers in organizing these trips early in the school year.
Revisions to the K-6 art curriculum were also approved. Additionally, a new elective, Neurodiversity, introduced by a speech pathologist last year, was highlighted alongside the popular public speaking class. Updates to the Latin curriculum for levels 2, 3, and 4 were also noted, with contributions from Mr. Klein and Mrs. DeBonis.
On the financial front, the board discussed amendments to lease financing for technology and camera systems to accommodate increased budget lines. The board also acknowledged a generous donation of $1,500 in gift cards from Acme, which will be used for parent partnership nights.
The board addressed personnel changes, including resignations and new appointments. Several para-professionals, a part-time bus driver, a custodian, lunch aides, and a school nurse for Franklin School were among the new hires. Additionally, a special education teacher for the middle and high school was appointed.
Lastly, the board mentioned a tentative memorandum of agreement with the custodial maintenance group, which is expected to be ratified soon and included in the October agenda for contract approval.
