- Meeting Overview:
The Saddle Brook School Board convened recently to address a range of topics, with discussions centered on an alternative eighth-grade trip, recent renovations at Washington School, and various upcoming events and initiatives within the district.
One of the most notable discussions during the meeting was the proposal to shift the traditional eighth-grade field trip destination from Washington, D.C., to Rocking Horse Ranch. This change comes in response to declining participation in the Washington, D.C. trip. The middle school principal, eighth-grade advisers, and Superintendent Toni Violetti collaborated on this alternative, highlighting a range of activities such as horseback riding, mountain tubing, rock climbing, and team-building exercises. The proposed trip promises to be more affordable, and the advisers are optimistic that fundraising efforts will cover most of the costs. The board expressed interest in the alternative destination, considering it a viable option to maintain student engagement and participation.
In addition to the field trip discussions, the meeting featured a report from the student representative, Syvana, who provided updates on several schools in the district. Washington School recently completed renovations funded by a bond referendum. These updates included the transformation of four classrooms, installation of an elevator, and repainting hallways to reflect “Saddle Brook Pride.” The school also added a faculty restroom and a playroom equipped with carpeting and an interactive projector for preschool students. Washington School is set to celebrate its 100th anniversary next month.
Franklin School recently hosted a successful kindergarten playdate event, with strong participation from students and parents. The school leadership discussed school pride and expectations during this event. Franklin School’s back-to-school night is scheduled for September 5th, while Smith School plans similar events for September 24th. At Smith School, fifth- and sixth-grade students are involved in mentoring younger students during recess and other activities. The school is also introducing a morning patrol program where older students assist younger ones during drop-off.
Long Memorial School unveiled its new motto for the year: “leading by example, optimistic thinking, navigating situations, and grit and determination.” The school plans to recognize students who exemplify this motto as “Long Memorial Stars of the Month.” The middle school has initiated a Falcon of the Week program to recognize students’ contributions, with Christopher Salgado being the first honoree for helping peers during their first week back.
The high school report highlighted various activities marking the start of the 2024-2025 school year, including senior sunrise activities and annual class meetings to discuss school policies. Picture day is set for September 10th, and there was a strong turnout for back-to-school night. The high school is preparing for a fall pep rally on September 20th and will host college visits for students.
The athletic department announced a Senior Day celebration for the marching band, cheer team, and football team, scheduled for September 21st, followed by a football game against Hasbrouck Heights. Superintendent Violetti emphasized the importance of attendance, noting that many emails regarding attendance standards were being routed to spam folders, an issue the tech department is addressing.
Superintendent Violetti also discussed the importance of safe crosswalk usage in front of the middle and high schools, urging families to model safe crossing behaviors and avoid jaywalking. She reminded attendees of a school closure on October 3rd and an upcoming 40-year reunion for the class of 1984.
During the meeting, the board discussed the new High School counseling newsletter, led by the director of curriculum and instruction, Mrs. Dbonis. This newsletter aims to keep families informed about various activities and will be sent out quarterly. Mrs. Hanenburg, the supervisor of early childhood and special services, also sent out the Washington newsletter to share updates from Washington School.
The board continued its discussions with updates on the referendum project from Mr. Karate. The DEP has a 49-day timeline for approval, which could extend if additional information is required. The board has been in communication with the DEP since July 2023 and has experienced delays due to additional requests from various reviewers.
Public comments were invited, but no community members stepped forward to speak. The board then focused on various agenda items, including the mandated District emergency virtual remote learning plan and a statement of insurance concerning paraprofessionals, both state requirements.
In the policy section, a motion was made to approve items listed as P24252, which passed unanimously. The negotiations section introduced a sidebar agreement dated September 18, 2024, between the Saddle Brook Board of Education and the Saddle Brook Education Association. This agreement pertains to five clubs at the middle and high school levels, with four having operated for at least a year without appropriate remuneration for staff. The motion passed with five votes in favor and one abstention.
