Saddle Brook School Board Discusses New Sensory Rooms and Student Achievements
- Meeting Overview:
The Saddle Brook School Board meeting focused on enhancing the educational environment through the introduction of sensory rooms and recognizing outstanding student achievements. These initiatives aim to support student well-being and foster a positive school culture. The meeting also covered various school activities, financial updates, and policy changes, emphasizing the district’s ongoing efforts to improve its educational facilities and programs.
0:00A significant portion of the meeting was dedicated to discussing new sensory rooms at Smith and Franklin Schools. These rooms, including the Falcon Nest at Franklin School, are equipped with interactive items such as a tactile wall, a bean bag chair, a large orb chair with Bluetooth, light and sound effects, a rocker seat, a lighted bubble tube, and sensory floor tiles. The sensory rooms aim to provide a safe space for students needing sensory breaks, helping them manage emotions, increase focus, and improve social skills.
15:59In addition to the sensory room, the playroom at Washington School was discussed. It features a funtronic floor installed during the recent budget season. This interactive floor allows students to engage in educational games like a digital piano, car racing, and counting activities. The room is designed to be a warm and inviting environment for students who may find large spaces like gymnasiums overwhelming. Renovations at Washington School also included the addition of four new classrooms to accommodate a growing student population.
Three students were honored for their outstanding contributions. Janna, a new student who speaks English as a second language, was celebrated for her effort in art class and her determination to engage with classmates and school activities. Her recognition emphasized her ability to seek help and improve academically, noting she “adds true value to any class she is in.”
Charles was acknowledged for his respectful demeanor and leadership qualities, particularly through his community project contributions and role on the wrestling team. The board recognized his balance of hard work, kindness, and intellectual curiosity, labeling him as an exemplary student. Alexis received accolades for her leadership in various clubs, including her presidency of the FBLA chapter and co-presidency of the Falcons for Change activism club. Her achievements in projects focused on voting education, food insecurity, and diversity initiatives were commended. Alexis was further recognized for her role in starting The Culinary Club and securing a grant from Rachel Ray to support its activities. Her professionalism and dedication were emphasized as she was noted to “represent our school like a seasoned professional.”
0:00The meeting also addressed the district’s annual financial audit, which is currently underway. The budget for the 2025-2026 school year is in development, with administrators preparing their proposals. Several projects have received 60% state reimbursement funding, including the replacement of nine boilers and HVAC upgrades at Franklin and Smith Schools. Renovations to the main athletic field began on November 11, with turf installation expected by March, weather permitting. Partial window replacements at the high school and renovations at Coolidge are progressing, with completion anticipated soon. Washington School’s elevator renovations are nearing completion, pending final inspections.
The superintendent reported on the receipt of a recycling grant for Smith School’s Environmental Club, which aims to enhance recycling efforts. Addressing chronic absenteeism was noted as a concern, with letters sent to families of students absent seven or more times since September. A new policy equates five tardies to one absence, sparking discussions about its implications for younger students. An initiative involving N4S, a nonprofit focused on improving student attendance, includes a parent engagement component.
The Seal of Biliteracy program was also discussed, noting a substantial increase in student participation from 11 last year to 37 this year.
37:04Policy changes were proposed, including revisions to the high school petty cash account and a policy regarding unmanned aircraft systems, allowing drone usage during sports events with the superintendent’s approval. These changes reflect a balance between modern practices and safety considerations.
