The meeting also included discussions on ongoing and future district projects, personnel decisions, and acknowledgments of community support.
The meeting began with a notable tribute to retiring staff members who have made contributions to the district. Among those honored were Teresa Martin, a longstanding special education teacher at Helen Smith School, and Laura Stern, an occupational therapist whose innovative therapy techniques and deep connections with students were celebrated. Teresa Martin’s career, spanning 38 years, was marked by her mentorship and dedication to students with learning challenges, using specialized approaches like the Orton Gillingham method to support those with dyslexia. The reflections from colleagues underscored her impact as a cornerstone of the educational community.
Laura Stern was lauded for her cheerful demeanor and unique approach to therapy, which included breathing exercises to help students face challenges. Her ability to establish strong bonds with students and colleagues alike was emphasized.
Miss Ricky, from Washington School, was celebrated for integrating art into early education. Mrs. Kathy Ripus, a middle and high school English teacher, was commended for her dedication and impactful teaching methods, while Miss Ariana Diaquino, known as Miss D, was acknowledged for her engaging and creative approach to kindergarten education.
Additionally, the board honored students who achieved the New Jersey State Seal of Biliteracy, recognizing their proficiency in languages other than English. Students were acknowledged for their achievements in languages such as Spanish, Polish, French, and Russian, receiving commendations for their dedication and linguistic skills.
