Safety Enhancements and Exciting Curriculum Changes Headline Collingswood School Board Meeting
- Meeting Overview:
The Collingswood School Board meeting included discussions on safety improvements, especially the installation of new external blue lights indicating lockdowns, and the introduction of ten and a half new high school classes set to expand the educational opportunities for students. Additionally, updates were provided on the handling of a recent pipe burst at the middle school, changes in grading policies, and plans for student engagement through shared athletic programs and dual credit courses.
A major highlight of the meeting was the announcement of safety upgrades across school buildings. Blue lights have been installed on the exteriors of schools to signal lockdown situations to those outside. This initiative particularly targets loud environments like cafeterias and APR rooms. The system is designed with two blue lights for each post-middle school and one for each elementary school, aimed at improving safety protocols.
Another topic was the introduction of new courses for the high school curriculum, reflecting efforts to align with student needs and interests. Among the new classes are civil engineering and architecture, journalism, creative writing, public speaking, digital photography, strings orchestra, and various health and physical education classes, such as fitness and wellness, strength and conditioning, and team sports. The return of these previously offered classes was emphasized, despite the challenges posed by budget constraints. A new policy allows seniors, who have earned enough credits, the option for early release or late entry, thereby freeing elective seats for underclassmen and providing seniors with more schedule flexibility to accommodate work or childcare responsibilities.
The board also addressed the recent pipe burst at the middle school, detailing the quick response to mitigate damage and ensure safety. Although the cause of the burst remains undetermined, effective cleanup efforts and environmental assessments returned positive results. The damaged areas are set to be repaired internally, with the impacted special education class temporarily relocated. Questions about insurance coverage were addressed, confirming that claims would cover damaged flooring and furniture, with minimal book damage reported.
Grading policy changes were another focus, with a newly proposed grading floor at 50% for assignments. This policy aims to support struggling students by adjusting final grades to a minimum of 50%, while still reflecting actual performance on individual assignments. Concerns were raised about the potential for this policy to discourage effort, though suggestions for an appeals process were discussed to ensure students demonstrate effort before receiving the minimum grade.
There was also a discussion on dual credit opportunities, highlighting partnerships with Camden County and Stockton for additional language courses. The board addressed the challenges of succinctly communicating online course options to students.
Additionally, the board reviewed the school calendar in relation to snow days and makeup days, emphasizing the need to meet the 180-day requirement for graduation. Suggestions were made to adjust makeup days to ensure they align with holidays like Juneteenth, with plans to consult the calendar committee for a final decision.
Personnel matters included the hiring of Mr. Bradley Klene as interim STEM supervisor and filling a vacant secretarial position at the high school. A policy regarding extracurricular activities for homeschooled students was revisited.
During public participation, a parent expressed the need for information on the potential rebranding of the middle and high schools as part of the Unified Campus initiative, while another community member sought clarification on a shared services agreement.
