Sayreville Planning Board Reviews Eisenhower Elementary Parking Expansion, Offers No Recommendations
- Meeting Overview:
The Sayreville Borough Planning Board’s recent meeting focused primarily on the Eisenhower Elementary School parking lot expansion project presented by Brian Ees of Speasel Architectural Group. The board reviewed the non-binding capital project, offering no recommendations for changes. Additionally, the board considered a request for a site plan review by the environmental commission for a subdivision application, which was ultimately postponed to the next meeting.
The discussion on the Eisenhower Elementary School parking lot expansion project revealed the school’s need for additional parking space for staff and visitors. Ees detailed the planned enhancements, which include expanding the existing parking lot and improving the current bus loop for safer operations. The proposed expansion aims to alleviate parking shortages by adding approximately 31 new parking spaces on the southwest side of the school. The project also includes a heavy mill and overlay of the existing parking area, the installation of new lighting for safety, and a redesigned traffic flow to accommodate both staff and buses more effectively.
Board members inquired about the buffer between the new parking area and the existing sidewalk on Ernston Road. Ees confirmed a 20-foot separation, which includes a grade change to minimize light spillage onto the road. Although landscaping was not included in the project’s budget, the school district expressed openness to exploring future landscaping projects, potentially involving the PTA or local commissions.
In addition to the parking lot expansion, the board discussed a subdivision application for a property along Highway 35. The applicant requested additional time to address comments from the public and the board’s planner. The board agreed to carry the application to the next meeting on August 6, with a proposal to involve the environmental commission for further review.
