Shutesbury Committee Tackles $1.2 Million Budget Shortfall
- Meeting Overview:
The Shutesbury School Committee’s recent meeting revealed a projected $1.2 million budget shortfall for the 2025-2026 school year, which has led to the creation of a subcommittee devoted to exploring revenue generation. This financial challenge was at the forefront of a session that also included policy amendments, capital project updates, and personnel changes.
The budget issue took center stage as the committee grappled with the implications of the shortfall. Concerns were raised about the potential for teacher cuts, with the superintendent advising discretion in sharing specific details to prevent staff from seeking employment elsewhere. In response to the fiscal challenge, the committee decided to form a subcommittee with the aim of finding new revenue sources. Members called for more frequent conversations and the establishment of liaisons to improve the budgeting process and address concerns from one of the towns about the current budget strategy.
In addition to the budget talks, the committee also tackled the topic of capital projects. The conversation touched on the ongoing work on the kitchen during the summer, as well as the roof, spoilers, kitchen, and floors. There was also a mention of a dialogue regarding the driveway situation. Further discussion revolved around the track and field project, including the need for additional funds and the adjustment of restrictions to accommodate the chosen plan.
Another item on the agenda was the approval of a $5,000 increase in the fiscal year 25 budget principal salary line. The committee debated the increase before ultimately approving it, recognizing the budgetary implications it entailed.
Personnel updates were also a key feature of the meeting. The superintendent provided information on the arrival of new staff members Ann and Shannon Cleveland and the hiring process for the director of student Support Services position. Additionally, the search for a new principal for Leverett school was reopened. The incoming principal expressed enthusiasm for collaborating with the outgoing principal in a transition meeting and outlined plans for organizing parent and family events over the summer.
On the policy front, the committee dealt with various items including the motor vehicle idling on school grounds and gifts and solicitations by staff. A debate arose over the language in the motor vehicle idling policy, with suggestions made to replace “his or her car” with “their car” and to add a specific time limit for idling. Ultimately, the committee voted to table the motor vehicle idling policy vote and revisit it with the proposed changes at the next policy meeting. Other policies, including gifts and solicitations by staff, saw minor language adjustments before being approved with amendments.
The meeting also reviewed educational opportunities for military children and student absences and excuses. While the policy on student absences and excuses was discussed, chronic absenteeism was acknowledged as a separate issue not covered within the policy’s scope.
As the meeting drew to a close, the committee approved the minutes from previous sessions and looked forward to future business, including the schedule for policy committee meetings. The session adjourned with members expressing enthusiasm for the upcoming break before reconvening in September.
