Shutesbury Library Board Alters Paver Selection for Building Project Amid Construction Updates
- Meeting Overview:
The recent meeting of the Shutesbury Library Board featured discussions surrounding the library’s ongoing building project, including a decision to alter the paver selection for the new library’s exterior, updates on construction progress, and funding considerations. The Board reached a consensus to use Limestone gray pavers exclusively, instead of a previously planned combination with charcoal, to achieve a more unified appearance for the site.
During the meeting, an update on the building project was provided, highlighting the completion of the foundation, below-slab plumbing, and electrical conduits. Despite some delays in electrical work, favorable weather conditions allowed the project team to complete additional site tasks ahead of schedule, including detention basin formations and topsoil spreading. This early progress is expected to support early germination in the spring. The Board also confirmed that power had been established in the on-site trailer, and the facilities were now operational, including the capacity for phone-in meetings. A representative from the Conservation Commission inspected the site and expressed satisfaction with the recent repairs.
Regarding the exterior finishes, the Board engaged in a discussion about the selection of paving materials. The initial plan involved two colors of pavers—Limestone gray and charcoal—for different zones around the building. However, the landscape architect advised that the contrast between these colors was excessive. Following a presentation and discussion, Board members agreed that having two colors was unnecessary given the project’s scale. One member noted, “I think the two areas are too small to have two different colors,” while another added, “I would prefer just having the one.” Consequently, the decision was made to use only Limestone gray pavers. The Board plans to communicate this change to the general contractor promptly and ensure the materials are ordered in a timely manner. The engraving of names on the Limestone gray pavers was also discussed, with a deadline for finalizing details set for the end of November. There was some flexibility regarding the engraving timeline, and the contract with Handover Pavers allows for ongoing engraving opportunities.
Interior design choices were another focal point of the meeting, with the Board evaluating samples for floor finishes. Previous decisions favored Palladium as the primary resilient flooring, but it was deemed too dark. The Board considered alternative options, such as Dharma Air, which offered a lighter contrast. After reviewing new carpet samples, including Misty, the Board ultimately decided to use a combination of Pros and Palladium for the flooring, with the recognition that the choices could be revisited if necessary. A consistent design approach was emphasized, particularly given the library’s diverse uses and the importance of aesthetic appeal.
The meeting also addressed grant funding and upcoming events. The Board discussed the Municipal Vulnerability Preparedness (MVP) Grant and strategies with the new interim Town Administrator. There was mention of a call from Jim McGovern’s office about congressional directed funds, clarifying that the library applied for a single $250,000 grant. The discussion acknowledged uncertainties related to the federal budget and potential impacts on grant availability. The Board also discussed furniture procurement. A quote for shelving was presented at approximately $136,000 installed, with efforts ongoing to categorize eligible and ineligible costs.
Site construction updates included a delay involving the electrician, but progress continued with the installation of the septic tank and expected arrival of storm drainage structures. The Board stressed the need for timely completion, particularly concerning the concrete pour before winter. Monthly reports from the Owner’s Project Manager (OPM) were deemed necessary, and the payment of two invoices totaling around $800,000 was confirmed.
