Despite the setbacks, efforts are being made to obtain an updated schedule from the contractor, as the last one provided dates back to early December.

Attention then turned to the proposed design of the library’s exterior entry sign. The board discussed a proposal to enhance the sign’s visibility by making it double-sided and positioning it perpendicular to Leverett Road. This change would increase the sign’s dimensions to seven feet wide and 46 inches tall, with an 18-inch concrete base. While the proposal received support for its improved visibility, concerns were raised about the potential costs of these changes. The board engaged in a debate weighing the practical benefits against the financial implications. The sign will feature weathered steel with stainless steel lettering, sparking a conversation about the aesthetic quality of weathered steel. It was clarified that, although it may resemble rust, weathered steel is durable and visually appealing, as evidenced by its use in other projects.

The board also focused on the interior design elements of the library, particularly millwork and cabinetry. Members reviewed samples for flooring and millwork, settling on maple veneer for its durability and aesthetic appeal. Specific areas, such as the meeting room’s kitchen, are designed to be warm and inviting with a combination of wood tones and white finishes. The kitchenette’s design prompted a discussion on materials and appliances, examining the practicality of solid surface countertops and the use of push latches for cabinetry. Some members voiced concerns about the reliability of push latches.

Further design considerations included the proposed finishes for the circulation desk and other interior elements. The design team aims to create a cohesive flow of color throughout the library, with distinct schemes for different areas: yellow walls for the children’s room, a subdued Sienna hue for the adult room, and a greenish tone in the entryway. Final color selections will be determined once the drywall is installed and construction lighting is in place.

Subcommittee reports provided additional updates on the library’s progress. The board is engaged with the select board to secure an easement with National Grid, essential for providing power to the facility. Additionally, a contract with MVP for a battery storage system will enhance the library’s solar energy capabilities, with MVP providing extra funding for this initiative. The board is also managing grants for furniture purchases, with a budget of $5,500 earmarked for the teen area, requiring orders to be placed by March 31. Stackable “Rock and stack” chairs have been ordered, along with plans for additional tables and a flat-screen TV for the teen room.

Shelving proposals are still pending, with delays from several vendors causing frustration. However, issues with one vendor, Tucker, have reportedly been resolved, as they have resumed normal operations. The board is also exploring storage solutions for unplanned spaces, considering cabinets or carts that would fit effectively.
