Somers Point City Council Discusses Noise Ordinance Amidst Eagle Scout Honors and Community Safety Initiatives
- Meeting Overview:
The recent Somers Point City Council meeting was marked by a discussion on the city’s noise ordinance, particularly its impact on local businesses, as well as the recognition of a young Eagle Scout for his contributions to the community. Other discussions included the “Safe Routes to School” initiative and community safety measures, alongside various administrative resolutions and public concerns.
The city’s noise ordinance was a focal point of the meeting, with substantial debate surrounding its implications for local establishments. A representative for a business owner addressed the council, highlighting the challenges posed by the existing ordinance, which prohibits outdoor music after 11 p.m. Although indoor music can continue until 2 a.m. if the establishment is licensed, the representative pointed out the inconsistency in regulations and advocated for extending outdoor music hours to 1 a.m. on Fridays, Saturdays, and three holiday weekends. This requested extension aims to accommodate shifts in social patterns, where patrons frequent businesses later in the evening. The representative argued that the additional hour is important for maintaining business viability, emphasizing the importance of adapting to consumer behavior.
Community member Bill Collins raised concerns about the enforcement of boat launch permits at local ramps. Collins cited specific instances of individuals bypassing permit requirements. He criticized the current signage for being inadequately visible and urged the council to enhance enforcement efforts to capitalize on potential revenue from launch fees. Collins emphasized that while the beginning of the season was missed, the city could still benefit from improved fee collection in the latter part.
In another public comment, Levi Fox announced his candidacy for the upcoming council elections, voicing his intent to address residents’ concerns, particularly regarding rising rental costs. Fox proposed exploring rent control measures, advocating for a cap on annual rent increases, a practice employed in other New Jersey municipalities. He highlighted the need for a committee to investigate reasonable rent stabilization options.
Elsewhere in the meeting, the council recognized Carson Endicott with resolution number 154, honoring his Eagle Scout achievements and contributions to Richard Summers Memorial Park. His project, which included extensive fundraising and community collaboration, was celebrated by the council. Carson’s brother, Eli Endicott, also presented his Eagle Scout project proposal, receiving supportive remarks from council members for his initiative to enhance accessibility and aesthetics at a local site.
The council also discussed the “Safe Routes to School” initiative, introduced by Mr. Snider, which involves a $771,000 Department of Transportation grant. The project focuses on pedestrian safety improvements in key areas, such as New Jersey Avenue and West Laurel Drive, with features like new crosswalks, handicap ramps, and traffic calming measures. The implementation of radar feedback signs and rapid flashing beacons is planned to enhance driver awareness and pedestrian safety.
Administrative resolutions considered during the meeting included approving salaries and compensation for non-contractual employees, advancing several city employees, and endorsing the Planning Board’s housing element and fair share plan. The council also authorized a contract with Cintas Corporation for AED installations at recreational facilities, emphasizing the importance of accessible emergency equipment.
Finally, Jam Oswald brought attention to a public safety issue regarding a stop sign near a bike trail. He expressed concerns about its placement potentially endangering cyclists, particularly children, and urged the council to consider additional safety measures as part of broader road safety efforts.
