The New Jersey Graduation Proficiency Assessment (NJ GPA) results revealed a stark contrast in performance among student subgroups. While the district surpassed the state average, with 82.5% of students passing the English Language Arts (ELA) test and 76% passing Mathematics, a deeper dive into the data presented disparities. Hispanic and Latino students had a 47.2% passing rate in ELA, lower than the 89.0% of white students. In Mathematics, the passing rates for students with disabilities and economically disadvantaged students were approximately 30% and 38.1%, respectively. The board discussed these results with a focus on understanding the underlying causes of the achievement gaps and emphasized the importance of implementing targeted support such as academic support classes and additional resources.

The board’s acknowledgment of the disparities in student achievement led to the announcement of a universal breakfast program aimed at addressing the impact of poverty on test scores. This initiative represents one of the many strategies the board is considering to bolster student performance and equity.

Facility upgrades and improvements were another focal point of the meeting. The board discussed the potential installation of LED lights on the OT field, following a community survey that received input from 742 participants. While the survey showed agreement on the benefits of a well-lit playing field for enhancing the student experience, the lack of consensus on the feasibility of this project prompted the superintendent to recommend further examination by the board’s committees.

In recognition of achievements, the board honored a high school student as the “everyday hero” for June and highlighted the success of both an earth science competition and a Museum of Natural History exhibit at Bedwell Elementary School. The custodial team was commended for their work, and updates on various school activities such as the International Food Festival and recycling challenges were shared.

The meeting also delved into the strategic plan’s progress, which includes facility work, track renovations, and engaging an architect of record. The board discussed examining school tech spaces and the social-emotional learning aspect of lighting at OT field. Additionally, goals were proposed focusing on decreasing achievement gaps, expanding community connectivity, and enhancing workplace and school culture.

Public comments featured gratitude for the support of the Bedwell’s Natural History Museum project and inquiries about the development of a capital reserve report for district buildings. Concerns were also raised about the proposed elimination of the supplemental section of the board’s agenda, emphasizing the importance of addressing challenging issues in public.
