- Meeting Overview:
The recent Somerville Borough Council meeting covered community and redevelopment updates, including the election of the 2025 council president, progress on the community solar program, and the appointment of new and returning members to various committees. The session highlighted Somerville’s ongoing efforts to enhance local infrastructure, increase community involvement, and address longstanding environmental challenges.
A primary focus of the meeting was the Redevelopment Committee, which welcomed the addition of former mayors Dennis Sullivan and Mike Kerwin. This move aims to tap into their extensive experience and historical knowledge to guide the borough’s future redevelopment projects. The council emphasized the urgency of addressing the properties affected by the West Main Street fire, noting that delays have negatively impacted local businesses and the downtown area. Efforts are underway to work collaboratively with property owners to expedite restoration activities.
In addition to redevelopment, the council discussed the long-abandoned property of former Color Technology on Cornell Boulevard, which has finally begun to see progress. Plans are in place to apply for grants to demolish existing structures and conduct necessary environmental cleanups. Collaborating with the Department of Environmental Protection and the Economic Development Authority, the council aims to secure additional funding for these remediation efforts.
Community engagement was another critical theme of the meeting. The council called for increased active participation from residents rather than passive observation through social media. They stressed the importance of community members contributing positively and constructively to local initiatives.
In a move to honor significant local contributors, the council announced the establishment of the Paul Robson Memorial Committee. This committee will focus on raising funds and selecting a suitable site for a monument to commemorate Robson’s contributions to the community. Additionally, former Planning Board Chair Bernie Nevada was recognized for his long-standing service, reflecting his influence throughout the borough.
The session also included an optimistic overview of Somerville’s future. Borough leadership highlighted the unique qualities of Somerville, emphasizing its diverse community and the blend of urban vibrancy with small-town safety.
Further demonstrations of community spirit were evident during the meeting as the council administered oaths of office for the new chief of the First Aid and Rescue Squad, Mike Bigalow. Accompanied by his parents, Bigalow’s appointment marked a transition of leadership, with gratitude expressed for outgoing chief Jim Barry’s extensive service.
The council also made several appointments to standing committees and council liaison positions, alongside planning board members. These appointments are part of routine preparations for the upcoming year.
During the meeting, the mayor presented the Citizen of the Year Award to Jason and Jamie Crasa, recognizing their extensive volunteer work and public service. Jason’s roles within the Somerville Recreation Committee, the planning board, and emergency management, coupled with Jamie’s contributions as an educator and her involvement in community initiatives, were commended. Their collective impact on the borough was acknowledged as significant and transformative.
The mayor provided a comprehensive state of the borough address, asserting that Somerville remains strong despite broader economic challenges. He emphasized that real growth happens at the local level and noted increased housing values and a thriving downtown. The completion of the Somerville Emergency Services facilities building was reported, which will house several public safety departments, thanks to the committee involved in its development.
An update on the community solar program for the landfill revealed that it had received state approval. This initiative is slated to provide discounted electricity to low and moderate-income households while remediating landfill areas. Securing over $10 million in state grants, the program will not impose any costs on taxpayers.
