- Meeting Overview:
In its recent session, the Somerville Borough Council focused on issues such as the management of street trees in the downtown area, the introduction of new parking regulations, and adjustments to fire inspection fees. The council also reviewed ordinances concerning trash collection and housing standards.
The most discussion revolved around the condition and management of street trees along Main Street. The borough’s Environmental Commission presented a plan to address the aging tree population, with approximately 85 trees, many planted over 30 years ago, showing signs of decline. A tree expert emphasized the need for improved air circulation around the trees. This plan also highlighted the economic benefits of a healthy tree canopy, noting that businesses on tree-lined streets can charge higher prices. The council expressed interest in collaborating with the Downtown Somerville Alliance to explore funding options for these initiatives.
A strategic approach was proposed to replace three to five trees annually to prevent simultaneous failures due to age-related decline, with an emphasis on diversifying tree species to mitigate vulnerability to disease and pests. The council also considered an “adopt a tree” program to involve the community in tree maintenance. This comprehensive tree service plan aims to ensure the longevity and health of the borough’s tree canopy, while enhancing the aesthetic appeal of downtown Somerville.
Another focus of the meeting was the introduction of several ordinances, particularly those concerning parking regulations and trash collection. Ordinance number 2744 proposed permit parking on one side of South Bridge Street to address shifting parking issues. Additionally, the council reviewed an ordinance aimed at prohibiting valet trash services in residential communities, which raised concerns over fire safety and health risks due to trash being left in hallways. The ordinance’s intent was to clarify that no trash should be permitted in common areas, aligning with existing health code violations.
The council also addressed an ordinance amending solid waste management, requiring specific containers for trash disposal to prevent critter attraction. This amendment sparked debate over whether open containers would attract more vermin than tied bags, with some opposition noted. The planning board’s recommendation to remove two parking spaces for safety at a key intersection was also discussed and deemed appropriate.
In addition to these topics, the council approved a resolution extending approval for a cannabis business in the area, highlighting ongoing efforts to develop local regulations for such enterprises. Furthermore, the council awarded a contract for improvements on Rehill Avenue, appointed a new member to the municipal alliance youth commission, and approved various grants for community projects.
