- Meeting Overview:
In a recent session of the Somerville Borough Council held on May 6, 2024, members of the law enforcement community were recognized for their life-saving efforts, new police officers were sworn in, and debates arose over traffic and parking ordinance proposals. The meeting also marked the return of the Memorial Day Parade, a beloved community event, after a hiatus of several years.
The session began with a notable acknowledgment of five police officers who were commended for their vital role in assisting a woman suffering from severe bleeding. The woman’s father publicly thanked the council and the officers for their swift action, which saved his daughter’s life. In this vein of public safety and service, the council approved the hiring of two new police officers, Timothy Shahed Black and Adam Jacob Shahat, who were officially sworn in, effective May 13, 2024. The chief of police offered gratitude for the support throughout the hiring process, while a council member encouraged the new officers to maintain their enthusiasm, engage the community, and remain vigilant.
The council also took time to recognize the upcoming Police Unity Tour fundraising ride and a 30-second recess was observed in honor of the police officers’ commendable service. In addition, Isaiah Wells, an Eagle Scout candidate, presented an plan for constructing a kiosk in Michael Lepps Park, which was met with constructive feedback and praise from the council.
During the public comment segment, residents brought forth a variety of concerns and opinions. Caroline Plos thanked a council member for her role in reinstating the Memorial Day Parade and inquired about the proposed shift from a director of Community Development to a land use director. The proposed change aims to enhance the efficiency and user-friendliness of the office. Josh Lions, accompanied by a neighbor, voiced opposition to ordinance number 273-2422, which proposed the extension of parking on Mountain Avenue. The residents expressed worries about the absence of changes in traffic control measures. Conversely, Justin Hendrickson supported the ordinance, highlighting safety concerns and the history of accidents in the area. Caitlyn Martin, representing her street, sought information on resident-only parking to alleviate issues caused by local businesses and renters. In response, the Mayor suggested the formation of a Public Safety Committee to address these parking concerns.
The debate on traffic calming measures on Mountain Avenue surfaced, spotlighting the challenges of ensuring safety while maintaining parking accessibility. Measures such as speed limit signs and stop signs were discussed, but some members were skeptical about their effectiveness. Further discussions involved the introduction of ordinances regarding licensing regulations for alcoholic beverages, the establishment of a historic advisory committee, and salary range adjustments for certain employees. Moreover, the council addressed the amendment of a department code related to the Community Development Office and deliberated on the extension of a no stopping or standing area on Mountain Avenue, which had garnered mixed reactions.
The meeting also served as an opportunity to highlight forthcoming local events, such as the farmers market, girls night out, and various Memorial Day celebrations, including the tour of Somerville bike races. The Mayor extended gratitude to individuals involved in organizing the return of the Memorial Day Parade.
