The team received 48 applications, reflecting national interest with candidates from various states, including as far as Alaska.

Zakowski highlighted the competitive nature of the search, noting the need for leadership and experience due to South Brunswick’s profile. The process included multiple interviews with 28 candidates holding doctoral degrees and 24 with superintendent experience. Deluchia stressed the importance of community engagement in identifying district strengths and needs, acknowledging the district’s historical excellence and the role of teachers in fostering student success. Challenges such as improving mental health support, addressing learning losses, and budgetary constraints were addressed, with an emphasis on community communication to navigate these effectively.

Dr. Bragan’s appointment was formalized in a consent agenda, recognizing his role as the educational leader for the community. His extensive background includes over 30 years in education, with notable achievements in previous positions such as passing a construction referendum and creating early college programs. His leadership during the COVID-19 pandemic in Edison Township was highlighted. The board expressed confidence in Dr. Bragan’s capabilities, with one member stating, “I am so confident that we chose the perfect candidate for South Brunswick.”

Dr. Bragan expressed gratitude for the opportunity and pledged to lead the high-performing district effectively. He emphasized the importance of teamwork in leadership, particularly in education, where building consensus while maintaining accountability is crucial. He articulated a commitment to understanding community priorities, urging stakeholders to evaluate his performance based on actions rather than words. “Absent my three kids, nothing is more important than my word,” he stated.

Public comments reflected excitement and optimism regarding Dr. Bragan’s appointment. A community member described the superintendent’s arrival as a “historic moment,” appreciating the involvement of students in the meeting process. Another resident, Bina Meta, congratulated the board and community for the progress made and expressed confidence in the new superintendent’s ability to meet district goals. Mark Lifeland, president of the South Brunswick Education Association, expressed his intention to foster a strong relationship with Dr. Bragan.

A student, Omb Bosser, offered a peer perspective, welcoming Dr. Bragan and underscoring the challenges faced by the district, including past budgeting and redistricting issues. He noted the previous superintendent’s effective handling of these challenges and expressed hope for continued success under new leadership. Bosser humorously cautioned about expectations for communication during snow days, adding a light-hearted note to the discussion.
