South Brunswick School Board Celebrates Student Achievements and Financial Stability in Latest Meeting
- Meeting Overview:
The recent South Brunswick School Board meeting was marked by recognitions of student achievements, an audit report confirming financial stability, and discussions on upcoming events and initiatives. Attendees celebrated the accomplishments of National Merit semi-finalists and other high-achieving students, while the board received positive feedback on the district’s financial health.
The meeting’s central topic was the recognition of twelve South Brunswick High School students who achieved National Merit semi-finalist status. This accolade places them among the top performers in a competition featuring over 1.6 million participants nationwide. The students expressed gratitude to educators who impacted their academic journeys. Each semi-finalist selected a teacher to honor, sharing personal messages of appreciation that underscored the influence of their mentors on their success.
Vikshu Ananthu, one of the honorees, thanked his English teacher, Kyle Brancado, for cultivating an environment of curiosity and acceptance. Shrier Beimma Vorupu recognized his physics teacher, Ken Saddowski, for his engaging teaching style that fostered a deeper interest in physics. The personal reflections continued with students like Prenit Gadella, who honored James Quilter, a math teacher at the middle school level. Gadella credited Quilter with teaching the value of perseverance, both academically and athletically.
In addition to the National Merit semi-finalists, several other students were recognized for their aspirations and reflections on their educational experiences. Nha Man Searin expressed gratitude to Dennis Duncan, her Latin teacher, while Arya Manon honored Terresa Wells, a retired first-grade teacher. Blossom Patel credited James Nobles for transforming her understanding of literature, and Anya Shredar thanked Rachel Levvenitis for her positive influence in math class.
Transitioning to fiscal matters, the board received a financial audit review from audit manager Paul Frereda. The audit, covering the fiscal year ending June 30, 2025, revealed no recommendations for improvement, affirming compliance in payroll, purchasing, and other key areas. The auditor’s unmodified opinion confirmed that the district’s financial statements were fairly presented according to generally accepted accounting principles. Frereda reported a decrease in the fund balance from $15,956,000 to $14,336,000, largely due to allocations for capital and maintenance reserves. Despite state aid reductions impacting financial surplus, the audit highlighted the district’s efficient financial management and commitment to maintaining balanced records.
The meeting also included committee and liaison reports, with one member sharing insights from a special education parent group meeting. The involvement of parents and a presentation on Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) were noted, with encouragement for further participation at the next scheduled meeting. Another board member praised a musical production of “SpongeBob” at Crossroads North, remarking on the outstanding performance and the dedication of the cast and crew.
In terms of business operations, the board reviewed the consent agenda, which included financial transfers, bills, and technology orders for non-public schools. The agenda also addressed adjustments to non-public resource officer contracts. A question was raised about funding processes for these contracts, clarifying that allocations from state and federal sources could fluctuate throughout the year.
