South Hunterdon School Board Explores Educational Enhancements
- Meeting Overview:
At the latest South Hunterdon School Board meeting, focus was placed on the academic performance of students, particularly English language learners, and the board’s efforts to support their educational journey. Additional discussions covered the introduction of new technology and programs, including a mobile robot for maintenance and a potential new position of athletic site supervisor. The meeting further addressed the successful implementation of a new communication system, preparations for the upcoming school year, and community involvement in facility planning.
Delving into the academic aspect, the board reviewed the New Jersey Graduation Proficiency Assessment (NJGPA) and the Access assessment for English language learners. The NJGPA scores for this year’s 11th grade were reported to be 57.6%, surpassing the state average. The board expressed concerns about the testing cohort’s performance and the impact of curriculum alignment on student success. The board discussed best practices and data analysis from the state, focusing on the dramatic differences between the scores of different subgroups.
The conversation also highlighted the challenges faced when reporting on small subgroup scores due to the district’s small size. Strategies and interventions to support multilingual learners were emphasized, including the pathways available for students who do not meet state requirements. The board inquired about the representation of out-of-district students in the data and the use of alternate assessments for students with disabilities.
Looking ahead to the new school year, updates were provided on the annual registration process and the adoption of Parent Square, a new communication system set to replace School Messenger. Emphasizing the importance of student readiness, the board announced a Kindergarten Camp scheduled to run from August 19th to 22nd at the new elementary school. This camp aims to familiarize incoming students with the building and routines, and transportation will be provided. Additionally, reminders were given about orientation programs and high-impact tutoring for rising fifth, sixth, and seventh-grade students.
In terms of infrastructure and security, the board discussed the progress of the new elementary school, which included refinishing the Tazo floors, installing furniture, and technology installations in the gym and maker space. Security camera installation, outdoor signage, and a ribbon-cutting event slated for August 15th were also on the agenda. Furthermore, the board announced plans for preschool and three community input sessions to discuss future facility planning.
During the public comment section, a member of the community brought up a craft activity and summer reading event for K-5 students. The Buildings and Grounds committee delivered an update on the building’s status and construction, including auction items for sale and a resolution to approve the name changes for the school building.
A significant portion of the meeting was dedicated to discussions about new technology and positions. The purchase of a Tiny mobile robot, intended to support maintenance and inspire a robotics program for students, was debated with some members expressing reservations about the expenditure. A vote was taken on various personnel appointments, including the consideration of creating a new position for an athletic site supervisor. This raised questions regarding compensation and responsibilities associated with the role. The installation of flat panels in the new elementary school and technology updates were reviewed.
The policy committee reported on policy changes, including reorganization, material changes, and the rewriting of a policy and regulation related to the prevention and treatment of sports-related concussions and head injuries. Lastly, the board approved the acceptance of the harassment, intimidation, and bullying report and concluded the meeting with a motion to adjourn.
