South Miami City Council Welcomes New EV Charging Proposal Amid Pew’s Departure
- Meeting Overview:
In a recent South Miami City Council meeting, officials discussed the installation of electric vehicle (EV) charging stations, the departure of a long-serving parks director, and the complexities surrounding a collective bargaining agreement. The council also addressed community concerns regarding park development and solid waste management.
The initial plan to install stations on Sunset Drive was revised due to ongoing revitalization efforts, leading to alternative locations being suggested. Notably, a site in front of the Avalon building was recommended, aligning with the city’s future urban landscape vision. Jolt’s approach includes not only charging capabilities but also visual effects and potential advertising opportunities for city events and emergency procedures. The company promised to cover installation and operational costs, offering users a daily free charge.
A representative from Jolt elaborated on the proposed locations and their benefits, emphasizing minimal disruption to ongoing development. The proposal also included revenue-sharing with the city, providing further incentives for the partnership. While several council members expressed interest, concerns were raised regarding site selection and the visual impact of the stations. The Vice Mayor noted the potential benefits of digital advertising if executed aesthetically. Commissioner Bonich expressed concerns about maintaining the downtown area’s aesthetic goals.
The council agreed on the need for a concrete proposal that clarifies economic terms and logistical concerns. The city manager was tasked with initiating discussions with Jolt to develop such a proposal.
In a bittersweet moment, the council bid farewell to Quentyn Pew, the parks director, who is leaving after over 12 years to become an assistant city manager in Fort Lauderdale. During his tenure, Pew advanced recreational opportunities and improved community services. The meeting included expressions of gratitude for Pew’s contributions, with a proclamation declaring a day in his honor. The council presented Pew with gifts, including a jersey from his favorite sports team, adding a light-hearted touch to the proceedings.
The meeting also covered the successful negotiation of a collective bargaining agreement with the American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees (AFSCME), Local 3294. This agreement, set to last from June 2025 to June 2028, includes changes to sick leave payout, adjustments to safe driving awards, and modifications to retirement benefits. Randy Brown, the union president, highlighted the collaborative atmosphere that facilitated the successful negotiation, noting past challenges when city employees went without raises for extended periods.
Discussions on park development also took center stage, with a focus on the proposed designs for Manor Lane Park. The council reviewed three potential designs, emphasizing community feedback. Proposed features included children’s facilities, social gathering spaces, and a dog park. However, concerns were raised about noise from traffic and trains affecting the dog park’s suitability. A splash pad was highlighted as a desirable addition, providing year-round water play opportunities. The conversation underscored the importance of community involvement, with a call for feedback mechanisms to gauge resident preferences. The council noted previous successful community engagement strategies.
Solid waste management concerns were also addressed, particularly regarding an interlocal agreement with the county. The city faces challenges related to landfill capacity and the expiration of the Coral Gables West transfer facility lease. The Mayor advocated for a month-to-month extension to avoid being locked into a long-term contract that might be detrimental. The council considered issuing a request for proposals (RFP) to solicit feedback from private operators on viable waste management solutions.
