South Orange-Maplewood School Board: Columbia High School Enhances Student Support with New Counseling Website and Wellness Resources
- Meeting Overview:
The South Orange-Maplewood School Board meeting focused on the introduction of new resources and support systems at Columbia High School (CHS), including a user-friendly counseling website and wellness suite. These initiatives aim to bolster academic and emotional support for students, with a particular focus on freshmen and their transition into high school life.
The newly launched CHS counseling website was highlighted as an essential resource, designed to be easily accessible through the main district page. This platform provides students and parents with crucial information on academic progress, college preparation, and various support services available at the school. The website’s user-friendly nature was emphasized, as it houses recordings and slides from presentations, making it easier for families to stay informed about the resources offered at CHS.
The counseling team at CHS, led by the new Director of Counseling, Dr. Jen Anton, outlined their comprehensive approach to student support. They stressed the role of counselors in academic, college, and career advising, as well as monitoring graduation progress. The team also plays a key role in addressing the unpredictable challenges of a high school environment, offering individual and small group counseling sessions to students.
During the meeting, it was announced that the school has introduced a wellness suite located off the alumni commons. This space is dedicated to providing emotional and mental health support, offering a safe haven for students who may need a break from the academic rigors. The establishment of the loft, a relaxed environment near the cafeteria, was also mentioned as an option for students seeking a quieter lunch experience.
In addition to these resources, the counseling annex operates as a center for both academic and social-emotional support, with programming aimed at enhancing executive functioning skills. The annex offers various activities, including a lunch group that focuses on study skills and wellness activities on Wednesdays. Tutoring opportunities are available in the SLAM lab during lunch periods, along with achieve tutoring, which involves peer support.
This program allows students to earn PE credits through participation in extracurricular activities such as sports. Families were reminded to check emails regularly to avoid missing deadlines related to this program, especially those who missed notifications due to summer absences.
To address unresolved issues such as vaping in schools, the installation of vape detectors was discussed, though their activation awaits system integration. Students caught vaping will undergo drug testing and counseling.
The meeting also covered the importance of proactive academic planning for students. Graduation requirements were reviewed, including the necessity of accumulating 120 credits with specific subject allocations. The significance of maintaining physical education compliance was reiterated, given the surprise faced by seniors who failed to meet this requirement. The discussion extended to language offerings at CHS, with mention of independent study options for languages not currently taught at the school.
In terms of academic assessments, the distinction between weighted and unweighted GPAs was explained. Weighted GPAs offer additional points for honors and Advanced Placement (AP) courses, which can impact a student’s overall GPA. The importance of GPA calculations being cumulative was highlighted, with a reminder that these will not be finalized until the end of the school year.
The meeting concluded with mentions of dual enrollment opportunities and vocational program options, encouraging students to explore diverse educational pathways. Emphasis was placed on ensuring that students are well-prepared for their academic futures, regardless of whether they pursue traditional college routes or vocational training.
