South Orange-Maplewood School Board Prioritizes Strategic Planning and Communication Improvements
- Meeting Overview:
The South Orange-Maplewood School Board meeting centered around strategic planning for the future and enhancing communication methods with parents and caregivers. These discussions were highlighted by a comprehensive caregiver experience survey and the announcement of a new strategic planning initiative aimed at setting goals through 2025-2026.
The meeting began with a significant presentation by Isaiah Draper, the director of communications, who shared findings from a caregiver experience survey. Conducted in collaboration with Seton Hall University’s market research center, the survey engaged 454 parents and caregivers to assess their perceptions of the school district. Key findings revealed that while urgent communications were timely, many respondents struggled with accessing important information. As a solution, there was a call for improved communication methods, which include regular newsletters via email, text messages, and printed copies for those without internet access. Additionally, a more user-friendly district website was suggested to facilitate better understanding of decision-making processes.
Equally notable were concerns highlighted regarding student mental health and emotional support. Issues related to safety, inclusivity, and bullying, particularly at Columbia High School, emerged as concerns needing attention. Parents voiced desires for increased funding in teacher salaries, school facilities, and student support. In response, recommendations were made for weekly communication with caregivers, timely responses to emails, and continued opportunities for parents to express their opinions. The presentation concluded with a commitment to developing actionable plans to address these concerns and enhance the educational experience for students.
Following this presentation, the board paid tribute to Dr. Jane Bean Folks, a respected educator within the district who had recently passed away. Her contributions, especially her dedication to marginalized students and advocacy for literacy, were acknowledged. Plans to memorialize Dr. Bean Folks included establishing a dedicated reading section in the newly opened library and creating a literacy grant in her name. The board expressed deep sorrow over her loss and emphasized her lasting impact on the community.
A presentation by Gene Cleary from the New Jersey School Boards Association introduced an ambitious strategic planning process coined as “determination, dream, and destiny by design.” This process involves comprehensive community engagement to define the district’s future direction. Cleary highlighted the proactive nature of strategic planning, noting its potential to foster consensus around student needs. He encouraged broad community participation, stressing the importance of engaging all stakeholders, including those without children in the schools.
The strategic planning process aims to prioritize goals to better serve students amidst challenges such as changing school enrollment, facility stress due to population increases, and varied needs of incoming families. Economic shifts, changes in family structures, and the retention of students exploring other educational opportunities were also discussed. The limited funding common to school districts was acknowledged.
The process entails creating multi-year goals with input from board members, staff, and community members to align annual district and board goals with broader objectives. This alignment aims to increase student achievement and ensure that the district’s goals reflect the community’s needs. Three public meetings are planned to facilitate this, starting with a “state of the schools” presentation. This will be followed by sessions to gather input on strengths and challenges and to develop consensus on future goals. The final meeting will focus on goal setting and strategies for implementation.
Inclusivity is a priority throughout the planning process. After the public meetings, the superintendent and administrative team will develop action plans aligned with the identified goals. Proper communication and advertising will encourage community participation in the meetings, with registration available to manage logistics while ensuring open access. The strategic plan, intended to guide the district for the next five years, will be documented and made publicly accessible online.
