- Meeting Overview:
At the recent South River Borough Council meeting, the Council addressed several issues, with the most pressing being the need for part-time crossing guards amid concerns of adequate staffing. The police department emphasized the importance of filling these positions to maintain community safety and alleviate the burden on officers who currently cover these posts when crossing guards are unavailable. The department underscored the benefits of the job, which include time off and sick days, and encouraged residents to apply.
In other matters, the Council discussed the 2023 and 2024 local aid programs, with a focus on the design of the 2023 program and the submission of a proposal for the 2024 Local Transportation Projects grants. The deadline for submissions was noted as June 30th. Additionally, the stormwater assistance grant was mentioned, with current efforts being directed toward mapping of the lines using authorized funds.
During the meeting, the Council also highlighted the successful awarding of the 2024 local aid program and noted that the contractor for a substation project is ready to begin work following the completion of necessary paperwork.
Moreover, the Council is in the process of closing out the 2023 records in anticipation of working on the 2024 budget, and they are also completing the borough calendar, which is expected to be distributed by month’s end.
The Council took the opportunity to commend the youth wrestling and basketball teams on their recent performances, as well as the U14 and U8 cheerleaders, who placed third and second respectively in their first competition of the year.
Concerns from a resident about party politics and town governance were also raised, with a call for respect and thorough decision-making in the interest of the whole community. The resident urged Council members to prioritize due diligence and to work collaboratively regardless of political affiliations to achieve the best outcomes for South River.
Finally, the Council adopted a series of resolutions covering a variety of routine and administrative functions, ranging from legal games of chance licenses to the appointment of various professionals and public service workers essential to the Borough’s operations. These included the authorization of pet licensing late fee waivers through April 1st and the scheduling of a rabies clinic for March 16 at the DPW building.
