South Saint Paul School Board Approves Special Election for Bonding Initiative and Capital Projects Levy
- Meeting Overview:
The South Saint Paul School Board convened to address several topics, culminating in the approval of a special election set for May 12, 2026. This election will focus on a $50 million bonding initiative and the renewal of a capital projects levy.
Superintendent Brian Zambreno elaborated on the financial aspects of the proposal, noting that the $50 million bond would leverage existing tax capacity from previously paid-off bonds. This strategy is expected to result in a modest increase of approximately $12 per month for the average homeowner. The aim is to ensure that the district can continue to support its educational facilities without returning to taxpayers with additional requests in the near future. Dr. Zambreno urged community engagement, highlighting plans to disseminate information through mailers and the commencement of absentee voting on March 27.
The meeting also featured discussions on the introduction and success of new high school courses. Principal Oaki reported on feedback regarding 11 newly proposed courses, nine of which are currently being offered. Among these, Real History, Aerobics and Fitness, and Mathematics for the Trades stood out for their innovative approaches and student-driven learning models. Mr. Anderson highlighted the Real History course as particularly engaging, allowing students to explore significant historical events through film-based projects. Mr. Olsen emphasized the practical applications of Mathematics for the Trades, which has garnered positive reception from students seeking career-oriented education beyond standard math requirements.
In addition to academic innovations, the board discussed upcoming cultural and theatrical events, including performances of “Macbeth” and a murder mystery titled “Tell Death Do Us Part.” These events are part of a robust arts program that aims to foster creativity and community engagement.
The meeting also addressed important stakeholder concerns. Two groups brought forward issues requiring the board’s attention: one family expressed frustration over administrative interactions, highlighting a need for improved communication and support; in another instance, students from affinity groups raised concerns about immigration enforcement activities affecting their community. The board acknowledged these issues. A public listening session scheduled for March 9 will provide a platform for further community input.
Furthermore, the board explored strategies to enhance student engagement during recess, a response to behavioral issues stemming from unstructured playtime. The proposed program, Playworks, emphasizes structured games and activities that promote inclusion and leadership among students, particularly fifth graders. The initiative aims to maintain a balance between free play and organized engagement. This proposal received a positive reception, with board members recognizing its potential to foster a healthier and more inclusive school atmosphere.
Additionally, the board approved a resolution of concurrence with the Native American Parent Advisory Committee (NAPAC), acknowledging improvements in liaison support and cultural programming.
The board also addressed logistical matters, including the approval of international field trips for high school language classes. Trips to France, Monaco, and Costa Rica during spring break 2026 were greenlit, with the board expressing confidence in the educational value and organizational planning of these excursions. These trips are designed to provide students with immersive cultural and language-learning experiences.
