South Saint Paul School Board Focuses on Student Achievement Goals and Community Engagement
- Meeting Overview:
The South Saint Paul School Board meeting, held on October 27, 2025, primarily centered on student achievement, community involvement, and updates on district initiatives. Key discussions included the district’s annual educational goals, a comprehensive achievement and civic readiness report, and initiatives aimed at enhancing student engagement and academic performance.
A major focus of the meeting was the presentation of the district’s updated annual goals, which now include five key priorities: ensuring all children are ready for school, closing racial and economic achievement gaps, preparing students for college and careers, ensuring all students graduate high school, and fostering lifelong learning. The district has incorporated previous goals, such as grade-level reading proficiency, into the Read Act for separate reporting. This restructuring reflects an evolving approach to addressing educational needs and measuring progress.
The presentation on the district’s goals included data on school readiness, where the district fell short of its targets in last year’s benchmarks. Despite this, there was noted improvement among at-risk students, particularly in math, and a slight increase in preschoolers meeting developmental expectations. Efforts to enhance readiness include prompt screenings for children aged three to five and creating a kindergarten transition team to facilitate smoother educational continuity.
In addressing achievement gaps, the focus was on growth among various student groups, including white students, students of color, and those qualifying for free or reduced lunch. Although progress was made, it did not meet the anticipated 3% increase. The presentation highlighted the need for continued efforts to narrow these gaps, particularly by ensuring growth among underperforming demographics.
A new goal was introduced, emphasizing the importance of lifelong learning, though it currently lacks historical data for comparison. The district aims to establish a framework for assessing this goal in the future. The emphasis in this area is on using data to inform instructional decisions and interventions, with an acknowledgment of the need for more significant growth among students starting below grade level.
The board also delved into the district’s Achievement and Integration Plan, which focuses on improving reading proficiency among Hispanic, Latino, Black, and African-American students. Despite not meeting ambitious targets, the district is implementing culturally relevant strategies and an anti-bias curriculum to support reading proficiency. The Goalgetters mentoring program and cultural affinity groups at the secondary level are also part of this initiative.
Digital citizenship emerged as a key topic, with the technology department emphasizing its role in preparing students for responsible online interactions. Lessons on digital citizenship will be integrated from kindergarten through high school, with a curriculum that evolves with students’ age and understanding. This initiative aims to cultivate responsible digital users and citizens.
Community engagement was highlighted through various updates and initiatives. The district’s CAPS program connects students with practical learning experiences, such as the Mississippi River Institute, where students explore career pathways. The board recognized the value of linking academic learning with hands-on experiences to better prepare students for future careers.
A unique highlight was a Ninja Warrior course project, which gained media attention and aimed to promote positivity and cancer awareness. The board praised the students and staff involved for their initiative and the broader impact on the school community.
The meeting also touched on logistics and support for students at different achievement levels.
In matters of community support, the board accepted a $1,500 donation from Thomas and Jane Simmer for the outdoor classroom.
The board also approved a preliminary field trip request for the high school International Baccalaureate history class to Spain and Portugal, scheduled for March 2027. This approval marks the beginning of planning for an educational trip that promises to enrich students’ global understanding and historical knowledge.
As the meeting concluded, updates on sports and extracurricular activities were shared, with excitement for upcoming events and performances. The board expressed gratitude for community support, essential for sustaining educational initiatives and fostering a nurturing learning environment for all students.
