It includes developing a “grow your own” pathway for students to explore careers in education and public service and strengthening mentorship and retention efforts, especially for staff from non-dominant cultural backgrounds. The third goal pertains to community engagement and empowerment.

The plan outlines that each goal will have several key indicators of progress, analyzed frequently to allow timely adjustments. The board’s approval was critical, given that the plan’s success is partially measured by the expected growth of each supported student. A board member inquired about the metrics for measuring success, especially concerning the AVID program’s impact on disproportionality in academic performance. It was clarified that the initiative is a three-year program with smaller short-term goals, and academic success coaches will work closely with principals to identify necessary interventions.

In addition to the achievement integration plan, the meeting also focused on a financial presentation regarding the sale of series 2026A bonds. Jen Chapman from Ellers discussed the bond sale, which supports several district financial undertakings, including long-term facility maintenance projects and refinancing previous bonds. The district received seven bids for the bonds, with Bank of America offering the winning bid at an interest rate of 3.45%. The bond sale resulted in increased anticipated savings of approximately $5.9 million for the district.

The board subsequently ratified the bond sale resolution. Chapman highlighted the competitive nature of the bond sale and the district’s strong credit rating, which contributed to the beneficial outcome.

The meeting also addressed the renewal of Superintendent Julie Nielsen’s contract. Set to commence on July 1, 2026, and expire on June 30, 2029, the contract includes a salary increase in line with market conditions, positioning Nielsen within the average salary range of the largest school districts in the state. The board approved the contract, which includes enhancements such as an increase in the district’s 403b matching contribution and a rise in the car allowance.

Superintendent Nielsen, in her report, highlighted several district events and initiatives, including the first Black History Month student social and efforts to recruit bus drivers and nutrition services workers. She emphasized the importance of transportation staff, sharing anecdotes of appreciation from students. Nielsen also provided information on upcoming meetings.
