- Meeting Overview:
During the Southwick Agricultural Commission meeting on November 20, 2024, discussions revolved around a proposed plant swap program, plans for a homesteading group, and preparations for upcoming community events.
The primary focus of the meeting was the plant swap program proposed by Lyn Blair from the library. The initiative aims to collect plants on Thursday and Friday at the library, followed by a swap event on Saturday, tentatively scheduled for the weekend before Patriots Day in April 2024. The proposal was met with enthusiasm, although logistical concerns were raised regarding how participants would claim plants they donated. A suggestion was made to issue tickets representing the number of plants donated, but the mechanics of this system require further clarification. Despite these uncertainties, the commission expressed a positive outlook on the event and discussed ways they might contribute, including publicizing the swap and donating plants from their own gardens. However, it was noted that the timing for donations in mid-April could pose challenges.
Further into the meeting, the idea of forming a homesteading group was introduced. Sparked by recent conversations during an open farm day, there was considerable interest in inviting individuals keen on homesteading to a future meeting. This initiative aligns with the commission’s broader goal of enhancing community involvement in agricultural practices and providing a platform for shared learning and support.
The meeting also covered preparations for a lighted tractor Christmas parade in the W weben section of Southwick on November 23. The parade will feature illuminated tractors and lighted floats, with specific guidelines prohibiting participants on foot and the throwing of candy or cheese from floats. This unusual prohibition of cheese prompted amusement among attendees. The parade aims to engage the community with a festive display while ensuring safety and adherence to guidelines.
Updates were provided on local turkey orders from Shauna Sherry at Second Eden. Despite being smaller than anticipated, ranging from 11 to 14 pounds, the turkeys were locally raised and processed elsewhere. Some members had already collected their orders.
Attention then turned to the planning of the third annual Farmers Forum, set for January 22. Emphasis was placed on selecting a venue, with the land use room being favored for its capacity and technological facilities. The need to secure the room in advance was highlighted to prevent scheduling conflicts. Discussions included potential topics for the forum, such as the application of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) in farming. Suggestions were made to explore GIS layers providing information on soil and water resources. While the idea was met with interest, there was skepticism about farmers’ willingness to engage with this technology, and the commission stressed the importance of tailoring presentations to farmers’ actual needs.
The meeting also addressed outcomes from the Open Farm Day, where despite adverse weather conditions, attendance was notably high. Participants emphasized the event’s educational aspect. To further engage the community, a proposal was made to organize a bus tour to local farms for senior citizens, potentially in collaboration with the senior center. This idea was well-received, highlighting the commission’s focus on accessibility and inclusivity in agricultural events.
Discussions continued on Chapter 61 protocols and their integration into the 2040 plan. Concerns about enforcement and promotion of these protocols were raised, with a call for clarity on implementation responsibilities. The commission expressed a desire to play an active role in monitoring and promoting these initiatives.
